Hi, I'm new here. My name is John and I live in New York State's Hudson Valley about 65 miles north of New York City. I have varied interests in almost anything automotive, including antiques, muscle cars, hot rods and racing cars. The car project that I'm working on currently (with my brother) is most appropriate for this forum. It's a 1933 Chevrolet 3 window coupe that was turned into an oval track stock car back in the 60's. By 1970 it had been wrecked, stripped of useable parts and left for dead in the woods. We "rescued" it a few years ago and have been trying to restore it back to its former glory. Our plan is to restore the car to be "period correct", although not an absolute restoration since we have little information about the car's original racing configuration. We want to build the car safe, so it can compete with various vintage racing clubs. But, we also intend to make the car meet minimum standards to be registered for highway use too. Thanks for letting me "show-off" !!! Here are a few pictures:
Welcome.. Several vintage racers on the board.. If you dont know them get in touch with the NJ club called the Garden State Vintage Race Car Club.. Bill Erb is the man to talk to..Bobby....
I've raced with the Garden State Club (GSVSCC), as well as the New England Antique Racers (NEAR), Senior Tour Auto Racers (STAR), Northeast Vintage Dirt Modified Club (NVDMRC), Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club (MVSCC), National Old Timers Auto Racing Club (NOTARC), Williams Grove Oldtimers (WGOT) and Daytona Antique Racing ***ociation (DARA), a**** other non-sanctioned events. This is the car we've been running so far in vintage events. 1970's style dirt Modified, 37 Chevy body, tube ch***is, big block Chevy power:
I love the coupe!!! My coupe was rescued just the same. I did put it back on the road and it is a ball. Just like your coupe, too far gone to ever be nice. I really wanted a hotrod, so that is the direction I went with mine.
It doesn't need to be any nicer than that! I like it...like it a LOT! The rods that look like they've been around a while just have character. People will walk past rows and rows of beautifully built "street rods" and then stop dead in their tracks in front of a car like yours.
Neat coupe. It's always nice to see them brought back from being abandoned and neglected. Had a friend who used to say that the "restorers wouldn't look at the stuff that the true rodders built there cars from.
How'dy John. Good pic's. Two thumb's to you fellow's saving some o-l-d tin. Esp. w/ some racing history.
There is definately a lot of truth to that statement. I think a lot of stuff has been p***ed up and even carted to the dump by restorers and/or "fancy" street rodders, that would have been plenty suitable for a vintage style hot rod or race car body. It should be a priorty for groups such as these to try to get the word out, that NOTHING should be junked! To me it is inexcusable to throw away anything that they haven't made anymore of in 70 or so years. If it can't be restored, it can probably be hot rodded. If it's too far gone for hot rodding, there's probably a vintage race guy somewher who would love to have it for a race car body. You'd be surprised what you can get away with, with a little ingenuity. Actually, I think this subject may warrant its own thread, so I'm going to start one.
Nice stuff. Certainly worthy of this forum. Good luck and keep us posted on the BIG board. Welcome to the Hamb Bil
