Hi guys, this is going to be the next full build here at the shop. For now we are just gathering parts. The body is a super nice original Australian 1933 phaeton. The firewall has been cut back, but other than that its all stock. We got a nice clean original frame. And I got a super clean 36' banjo that I rebuilt for it.

Plans are to build a nice simple runner. Going to be full fendered, flathead with an overdrive automatic. wire wheels, and really clean upholstery. Just going to drop the suspension enough to give it a nice rake, and run big and little tires. Probably going to be a dark maroon body with black fenders.

It will have the same feel as this 33' Phaeton:

I had a chance to put some miles on a model a phaeton and every since then i have been bitten by them.
Looks like its going to be a great car.

Being an Aussie body there will be a spear (Filler piece) on the on the lower edge of the body. Unlike US bodies it does not swoop from cowl to rear, fairly flat. It does not extend all the way down to running boards. Apart from that it looks to be in amazing condition and as a bonus it has the hood bows as well.

Thanks, this should be a fun build cause we're starting out with such nice parts.

The owner really has fallen in love with the original dark maroon color they had with the black fenders. I'm definitely a big fan of original patina, but I'm excited to see this come together as a complete car with the maroon and black accents.

Im finding all sorts of differences in the Aussie body verses the US body. Kind of nice to have steel in the doors though. Ha

Looks like a great start! There was one around here that came out of South Africa, super solid with only one repaint on it. Bob

I will be watching this build. After sedans, I love Phaetons. They were the rage in the 70's & 80's. The finished one is on my list as one of the best.

  13. And how would you like your hot rod done sir? I will have mine rare! How exciting to see one of these beauties coming on the road. Cool city bro. Congrats! ~sololobo~

  14. How did you get that out of this country :)

Dig the rear end rebuild holding fixture you have there, going to do that also.

It was already here in the US when he bought it.

Ya the fixture has made a huge difference in assembling theses rear ends. I've already done 2 quick changes, and this one banjo. And I've got another quickchange lined up.

Looking forward to this build as well, I will be starting my 32 Ford Aussie Tub in June. Fortunatly, the previous owner was kind and made all the replacement wood. Which I am glad, as I just finished a 31 Chevy Landau Phaeton and really have had enough of wood. Until I build a woody;)

  20. neat project, i would have to leave the black paint too but it aint my car. i am probably way off but that body reminds me of one built in queensland quite a few years ago by phil woodbrige, had centreline wheels and a ford cleveland engine if i recall.

Are you going to get rid of the Aussie sills under the rockers and make it like a US phaeton?

looks like a very cool build starting, 33 tubs are just pure class, not biased though. As the other posts mentioned, the aussie tubs have shorter doors,
altered cowl, the body was built up on wooden subrails, with a wood floor to the rear seat area. Building it like a U.S car and channeling over chassis and installing a full steel floor, this might alter the proportions with a shorter door.
a couple of pics of the ''spear'', sorry for the crappy pics.

I got looking more inside the car and there is some damage on both the rear door skins, and they just filled it with bondo on the outside to make it smooth. So I'm thinking that this paint job was done maybe in the 60's or 70's. I really want to strip it down and work my sheet metal magic to fix any issues. Really cool patina though. Bummer its got to go.

I want to get it bolted on top of the frame and get an idea of how it looks before we do anything. Im hoping to find a nice set of original fenders at the LA Roadster Show next month including a nice 33 roadster dash.

I got the frame sandblasted and started mocking things up.

I've been doing a lot more mock up on the chassis. Its basically a roller now. We used an original axle that's been dropped with a reverse eye spring. The back spring is in,and the open drive kit is installed. I also got the new brake master cylinder mounted and the first set of lines run to the residual valves.

Next is to mount the body on the frame and start mocking up the engine and transmission.
