Dan has sent more updates... Josh is providing measurements so that Dan doesn't have to try and guess at the car from thousands of miles away.
IE: It's a work in progress and fun to watch.
For example: the rake is now "much mo' Better" smile , louvers are getting there and Dan even has an engine in there now.
Dan has made more progress in a day than I could possibly have imagined.

    Regards,
    George

Looking damn slick George. Be a shame to hit those panels with a street rod color.

3banjos.... What, you don't want bright yellow???? smile
Here's the last two updated pics from Dan today. Thank you Dan! Now we can start adding different colors to see what will work? I may have to keep it a secret as 10 guys will have 10 different opinions. I have laughed at how many folks have let me know what they would do! I honestly just don't know yet.

    David,
Here are five different "metallic" renderings from Dan. He has been such a pleasure to work with. Of these, I will consider the darker gray. (Upper right hand picture)

Next up will be a series of 1930's to 40's solid classic colors.

    regards,
    George

Here are a couple of solid colors for consideration before Dan has to work on another project until next week.

Thank you for the great progress Dan!

The thinking from the discussion with Rex, Josh , Dustin , Dan and myself PLUS others here on the HAMB .....is that we need to go with a darker color in order to not lose the contrast with the stainless and chrome. I do not want to utilize anything that is trendy as I would like the paint color choice to last for decades and not a few years.

Trust that those of you watching are enjoying the process and would encourage more of your thoughts please.

    Regards,
    George

40 Ford maroon. Doesn't get more classic than that for a dark red.

    Eric,
Thanks for your input. Your 41' is coming along nicely after the frame was coated. Keep up the good work.

While I have been goofing off,...Josh has been working. He has the coupe going the other way now. It is no longer about about the decisions and creating / fabricating. It is now about getting the smallest of details right. Welding up unused holes, getting gaps correct and tending to the mundane that will make a difference in the end.
Josh has the coupe stripped down and will be working on getting all of the parts completed to hand off to Dustin for prep and paint. It will not be long before there will be a picture of the shell in its' color coat.

    Thank you Josh!

The chassis is going to have to be blasted as well as tended to for unnecessary holes and welding up previously "tacked" only modifications such as the motor mounts. The frame rail rear ends sure look odd without the body on. smile. Some of things that haven't been installed on the chassis before and will still need work for mounting are:
    1. the Kinmont brake kit from Johnson's Hot Rod Shop in Gadsden ,Al.
    2. brake lines
    3. fuel pressure and return lines
    4. "gi-normous" fuel filter
    5. fuel pump
    6. horns of some type to be determined?

    George

This car will look great in any color. It is so perfect why not BLACK?

I know it has been done to death but a car this good would look so much more menacing in black. Maybe with some suttle pinstriping in dark red?

    Silverdome,
It is still under consideration with my big beef against black being I get so darn tired of the effort to maintain it. I swore I would never own a black car again after the last one! Swirl Marks and scratches... If I do go this direction it would have to be the dark gray that Eric "Farmer12" likes as his choice.
    Thank you for your vision.

I second Silverdome's motion for black. I really like the contrast between bright shiny metal and black. That being said, can't wait to see this painted, great job!

    Build Update:
Josh finished the chassis up earlier this week and it was sent out for sand blasting. The sand blaster got right on it and has already returned the clean chassis back to Custom Auto. Josh mounted the chassis to a set of rolling paint jigs (old engine stands) and the guys have pushed it over to the paint prep area. See attached pictures.

The sheet metal that needed re blasting was loaded up and taken to a seperate blaster with experience in doing bodies. This is to insure that care is taken to not warp the sheet metal. We are in que at Blast Tech and the turn around time will be dependent on the work load in line ahead of us.

All the color renderings have been received and one particular color has been singled out for yet another test spray out. I am not anxious to share anything as no decisions have been made!

All of the parts requiring outside finishing work have been rounded up and sent to either the metal polishers or the plating company.

What's next? Getting the chassis primed and ready for paint is the immediate focus. After paint, Josh will be working with Dustin and Fred to balance paint progress with chassis assembly. I will be driving the newly rebuilt 700r4 up in the morning so that it can be mated up with the 392 to work on throttle shaft linkage to the valve body.

    regards,
    George

The visit up to Loveland was very depressing. I needed to go up and drop off the tranny, some valve covers for run in, odds and ends of some other parts and a disty. After months and months of seeing things going together, the coupe was virtually non existent. With the body shell, doors and deck lid at Blast Tech , and all the rest of the build parts on shelves, the lonely chassis was the only remnant of existence. Josh , Rex and I spent some time with color samples, discussed the hardware needs for adapting the flex-plate with ring gear to the crank shaft, went through some left over parts that I offerred up to the next builders needs, etc , etc. We decided on going with the Desoto tail light lens rather than the Chrysler set and then spent some quality time putting a HAMB friendly light bulb into the tail light housing to evaluate the output vs the non HAMB friendly light source. There was a decisive improvement in brightness for the non HAMB friendly running lights and not much difference at all for the brake light output comparison.

While there, I checked out some other projects and always enjoy seeing ideas and choices that others make. Interestingly enough, it reminds me of why none of us should be sensitive to others comments about our projects. I always see something that appeals to me and also see something that I might be less than enthusiastic about. All and all it was a productive visit and I look forward to seeing the progress AGAIN...and SOON> smile.

As a side note, I have added a color study that I find really fun. While it is way cool and even chopped more than my coupe, I don't think I could bring myself to do it. smile.
The crown in the back ground is the engraved center cap on my Real Rodders wheels from Pat O'brien. The engraving was done right here in Denver at 'Steel Tattoos'.

I am very pleased with Dan and Darrel's help for focus on the color direction. Thank you both very much!

    Regards,
    George

Well, what can I say about these pictures....
Like sending your wife to the SPA. LOL. They put mud on her face to make her prettier.
Dustin should have the frame in primer soon and completed through paint sometime next week.
Once he starts getting color on things, Josh will begin final assembly.

Thank you for tuning back in Dave. Much Appreciated.

I am currently on a mission to make or have made / modify my current set of tires. My really large Hoosiers only come in black walls and I would like to have red lines. I asked my friend Pete Stringer where in the world I might find them in Red Lines and he advised that I call Diamond Back tires outside of Myrtle Beach. I spoke with the founder "Bill Chapman" whom asked me about several specifications including the section width. We both reviewed the on line tire spec's together and Bill decided it MIGHT WORK in his tooling. I "offerred up" to send him a tire so that his team could give it a shot. The full understanding is that this is outside of his company's previous efforts and that the exercise is at my risk. Fair enough! I am so pleased with how friendly and supportive Bill is. I shipped the tire out early last weak and after 7 different UPS city relay transfers, it arrived in South Carolina this afternoon. Bill has already given it a preliminary overview and believes that he can successfully smooth and add a redline to my tire. The below link will provide you with an overview of how Diamond Back goes about their process.
    http://www.dbtires.com/howtiresmade.html

While not yet started, I am very excited as well as hopefull that Bill and the DiamondBack team will be able to pull this effort off.

THANK YOU BILL CHAPMAN! You are most gracious and I really can't say thank you enough.

    Best Regards,
    George

The frame prep has now been completed. Etching primer has been utilized on the bare metal and epoxy primer used where body work had been done to smooth up the frame rails that would show after project completion. The second picture shows the two different coatings.
I am looking forward to paint after water sanding. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for an outside picture shoot in the sunshine later in the week.

    Regards,
    George

    She is Back!

Please find the attached "body in white" pictures as the coupe was unloaded today. She has been on a trip to "Blast Tech" in Denver for a prepping clean up before etching primer. I have to admit that I am like a proud parent. She looks awesome.

Hope that you all like her too!

    Hello David,
Yes it is .....slowly but surely. Based on the good news feedback from Bill Chapman at Diamond Back Tires, I shipped the rest of the tires Tuesday. They will get them next week and get started on converting the entire set to "red lines". (As a funny side note: the guys at the local tire center love to see me coming. The boss will not charge me for pulling tires off rims and swapping as I do it so much. It has turned into my just buying pizza for them every now and then. They loving seeing build updates and have lots of inputs as they are obviously into cars.... Just more nice car people!)
I was really hoping to see the frame painted in body color this week, but not sure if it will happen? I guess now is as good a time as any to share that my color choice is "Pozzi Blue". The Custom Auto painter "Dustin" proposed it and after looking at all of our final candidates, it is my favorite.
It is non metallic, very dark and richly colored. It is almost like mixing navy and black. For those that have an interest, please just do a search for it's name, "Pozzi Blue". You will find plenty of pictures as well as history on a fellow named Charles Pozzi. Mr. Pozzi was an avid auto enthusiast as well as a race car driver in the late 30's and early 40's. Not only do I like the color, but it's history also had an influence in the decision to go with it.

Having history about a color is so much more fulfilling than just using a color chip. smile.

    Regards,
    George
