Hi All. Looking for some help from the Chevy Guys. I have a 34 Chevy master project I am starting. However, I have a cherry 34 Standard frame and want to use it. I know the standard was 107' wheelbase and the Master was 112. Does anybody know where the extra 5" is in the frame? Since I am missing the hood and fenders It's just a guessing game. I would like to be able to run the master long hood and avoid hacking up the front of the frame once I can find the hood panels. Found some dimensions on the Chevrolet heritage site.. Just nothing that will help with this. Thanks in advance!
I'm not certain but I would think it would be mid frame. The Standard being a three window would seem shorter behind the seat.
No bustle trunk on this one. This is a 34 2 door master sedan. In the pics below the 34 Maser body is on the bottom. Thanks again for the help all. Master_vs_Standard by Metalsled posted Aug 13, 2016 at 6:57 PM 34 Frames by Metalsled posted Aug 13, 2016 at 6:58 PM
Think you will find the length difference is from the cowl forward. The standard frame is wider in the wheel well area which may cause problems. I think I would try to find a master frame or build your own.
What you'll find is that almost every part on a Master is a little bit different from a standard, even if it looks the same.
Nothing interchanges between them. I know Master roadster doors are 2" longer than those on Standards. The hoods on a Master are also longer than Standards as well despite looking the same. So there's approximately 4" already.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm hoping to be able to use the front 3/4 of the frame and build the back 1/4 for my rear suspension setup. I just need to figure where to set the cowl on the frame to give me the right distance to the grill shell. Been trying to find a 34 master frame for 2 years with no luck so looking at alternatives to building an entire frame or buying one for 7-10K. The master matches the standard body mount holes in the front with maybe being a 1/16 of an inch off. It may be a Frankenrod but i'll get it as close as possible. Not much different than putting an A on deuce rails or some of the other combos out there. Just looking for more measurements for the 34 master frame to get me started.
So I've been pecking away on a 34 2door Standard for too many years. I can tell you both the Door and quarter window garnish moldings are shorter on the Standard than the Master. Also like you I needed a good Frame when I first started. The few frames I did find were Junk and even though I could have built a Chassis myself I chose to speed things up and just buy one from Superior Glass. They are in my back yard and had seen there product a few times. One the worst choices I've ever made. End result, I cut apart the Chassis they built in there Jig and made what I needed out of it I wish I hadn't had that experience. So bottom line I believe the length is in the Body itself not firewall forward. I can give you window and door length if you like. The Wizzard
I can give you window and door length if you like. The Wizzard I would appreciate that. That might give me a better idea. I'll post the results here.
I'm sure you know this already, but the '35 standard is pretty much the same car as the '34 master. I have a '35 standard 2 door sedan, so if there is any measurement you need off of that, let me know.
I keep hearing that, and from what I can tell the 34-35 standard have the same wheelbase 107". can you double check the wheelbase on your ride as well as center of the hood to the center of the grill shell on the top? Thank you so much.
As far as I know, the only difference between the two is the '34 master has a two-piece tailpan, and the '35 has the back panel as all one piece. My wheelbase is 107". I assume you wanted the length of the hood along the top hinge. Mine measures pretty close to 37".
there is a fellow, Mike, who supplied me with some info about my 33. he is here on the hamb @madmike3434 and has a couple 34's he is very knowledgable about the details and hopefully he will see this and reply. or maybe you could pm him.
So on my 34 Standard 2 door sedan the door at the lower belt line is 38-3/4" long and I had to shorten the Master window garnish moldings exactly 2" for them to work. If you measure the Standard hood along the edge where the side panel fastens it's 40-3/4" long. Quarter window opening is 29-3/4" at about the center line. I had no moldings at all when I started and found they are like Hen's Teeth. I now have the ones for my car handled and have some extra ones if anyone is interested. The Wizzard
Couple of Standard vs. Master threads in the past have run through a ton of info; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1934-chevy-master-or-standard.839243/ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1934-chevs-master-vs-standard-whats-differant.94044/
I own a 34 Chevy Master Deluxe. I could take some measurements for you if you'd like. I have the body off at the moment.
The 34 Master Dash will fit right in a 34 Standard without any changes to the mount locations and it looks great. It gives you gauges in front of the steering wheel and a glove box.
Not to throw a wrench into the whole mix, but how do you know the standard frame you have is a 34 ?? will your rad shell fit the frame ?? 33 master ,33 standard , and 34 standard are all ladder type frames and all quite different
It is not a guess as I have owned the car for 30+ years and it is a 34 STD. I have had it on the road for over 64k miles with fenders and hood, just decided to do a redo without fenders. I can also say without question that the doors, fenders, hood and grille are different STD/MSTR. The frame had the X-member cut out many years ago. Also have an extra frame from another 34. The spring hangers, and front mounts are also different. I can send pix if needed, I would be willing to help anyway I can.
34 master was the first frame with an x member . 34 standard is a ladder frame no x member . 33 standard and master are ladder frames
Masters (Down here anyway) also had a knee action front end and not parallel leafs, so no provisions for springs. Forgot about the dashes, a restorer friend mentioned that some time so if I wanted gauges in front of me, not in the middle, and a glovebox all I had to do was swap dashes over. Note the front suspension in a friends 34 Master phaeton project.
Same thing here MGTTUMPY 34 is the first year for the knee action and knee action chassis were the only chassis with an x member
My definition of a k member may be different than yours, what I am saying is the original supports. transmission, and rear engine mounts had all been cut out. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but all I can say is I have a Master Dash in my Standard. I took the standard out and replaced it with the Master. Some mod needed for the cowl vent handle. I can take measurements if needed.
