Hi Guys - I am finishing up an original Henry steel hot rod, and want to make sure I install the door check strap correctly, at least for the part I have. Realizing they may or may not be the original style, I have a pair of aftermarket T-shaped 10" thick rubber straps and the stamped metal retainers with 4 teeth. I've used an extremely solid oak aftermarket wood kit that has a strap slot milled in all the way through the B pillar from front-to-back at the same height as the check strap slot in the door. There is also a another 2nd slot in the B pillar, accessible from inside the car, that is at the same height and perpendicular to the first slot and only goes 1/2 way through, and provides access to the interior of the 1st slot. I'm assuming that installation is as follows, but would like someone who has (successful) 1st hand experience with this nit part: 1. Slide the T-strap through the hole in the door from inside the door, leaving the "T" portion to float inside the door as it's opened and closed 2. Slide the long 10" part of the strap all the way through the front-to-back slot in the B pillar, and temporarily let the excess hang out the back of the slot. 3. Open the door and position it at about 45 degrees to the car's center line. Pull rearward on the excess strap hanging out of the back to take the slack out. 4. Manipulate the small stamped metal retainer through the 2nd slot at 90 degrees to the strap, position it on the strap, with the teeth biting into the strap, drill 2 holes through the strap and into the oak B pillar. Tighten a pair of screws through the retainer, the strap, and into the B pillar 5. Trim off the excess remaining at the rear of the B pillar. I know this is a nit, but I can't install the seat yet as it interferes with access to the 2nd slot, retainer, etc. Couldn't find anything explaining it in HAMB history or the net. Thanks
That sounds like it is the right way. I looked for pictures when I did my Tudor bit couldn't find any of the door check. The t slot definately floats inside the door and is secured at the B pillar
As squirrel says we need a picture. The straps I had on an A roadster. Screwed to the door then the A pillar
Unless they improved them in recent years; the repop straps I used were more rubbery and stretched a bit after installation (original straps felt like they had fabric molded inside). Maybe get a feel for that during installation.
I cant help but on my 34 5 window one door opens wider than the other and I can only assume that part of one strap is hanging up somewhere in either the door or the B-pillar. So my only advice is to double check to make sure both operate fully. I have a full interior in there in the way of fixing the issue or getting you any useful images.
