Projects 1934 Nash Lafayette 3 Window Coupe

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Vics stuff, Apr 30, 2024.

  1. Bob! No smoke yet. Worked on the car today trying to figure out the starting issue. No power and I had tried to jump the starter. These have a 6VDC positive ground ?
I would like to get it running first to evaluate the direction I am going with this
I wished I had a chance to buy your car.

Very good looking car and definitely different that others. Some tasteful drivetrain mods and a little closer to the ground and I'd call it done but that's just my opinion.

    Can't imagine a 4-speed in Nash's economy-priced car.

  4. You are absolutely correct. That is what I am leaning towards on this car.. It just seems to be a factory built hot rod back in the day

Beautiful car . There’s a product wood boat builders / wood boat restorers use to reinforce loose joints with . It’s similar to fiberglass resin. A guy I know used it on the wooden door frames in a 35 Chevy sedan that he is working on . He got the doors squared up with the body then soaked the wood frame work with the stuff . The doors are solid .

When I was in my early twenties in the 80’s my boss and I would go up to a mom and pop sawmill and get tongue and groove pine boards milled with a planer that had to have been built in the 1800’s. The mill had a Lafayette in a row of old machinery. I think it was a coupe but it was to many years ago. When you roll down the side glass does it have a swoop in the top of the glass? I think it was that car I saw it on.

I WOULD GET IT RUNNING VERY WELL,

THEN SELL IT TO THE MOVIE INDUSTRY FOR OLD GANGSTER MOVIES

More doors are preferred for backseat Thompson-equpped occupants.

  9. Yes this does have the swoop in the top of the door glass. That is to clear the mount for the auxiliary wing window.

If you don't keep your car powered by Nash, the "Ford in a Ford" guys will give you grief..

  11. I am still trying to iron out the starting issue. I had the starter checked out by the local auto electric guys and they had to do some work on the bendix.

Awesome project! I have the same, 34 Noah coupe with the twin ignition 6. I am going down the street rod route with mine. I will be keeping an eye on your project!

  13. I have been quiet for a while on this car due to a shop I am building . Today I drove over to Rancho Cordova California to the Nash Nationals . Met a lot of great people there. No one had ever seen one of these bodies before and most agreed that it is a real low production number car. I have not gotten it running yet. It appears that the rings are stuck in the piston grooves and 3ea of the cylinders have almost no compression . Even after soaking the cylinders in Marvel mystery oil. I may end up pulling the head and pan off to remove the pistons and clean them.

  15. Thank you Outback. I just do not want to do something premature to this car and regret it later. With this car as complete and unmolested , I plan on to just get it up and running for now and figure out what direction I really want to take this.
No matter what i do , this is definitely a unique car.

AMC V8 as used in their Can Am (Trans Am?) cars. If you are going to do something different, you might as well go all the way.

  17. TCTND you may have a point on keeping this all NASH / AMC.
I will figure out what to do at a later date. Thank you for the suggestion

Great to see this again. Glad you don't care to commit any offensive changes.
Yeah I know we be rodders,,, but the mid thirties design was, ( in my mind )
the beginning of Art Deco and fluid styling.
Hope you get those cylinders freed up.
As far as mods go,, I would begin at ground level and work backward through the business.
The Last if ever would be tin work. Good functioning tires, maybe * maybe not* wheels.
Then brakes, suspension and handling, maybe then trans a mission depending on the strengh
of your motor etc. I know,, it's your your call, just throwin' around words here.
    Thanks for sharing.

Too rare a car to mess with. Sell to a restorer if you need a Hot Rod and buy a more common coupe for your Rod wit the profits.

  20. Tow Truck Tom and Bearing Burner , You guys are on the path that I am on. When I get the engine fired up and check out the drive train . I honestly think with the car as is , it would be a fun cool car without any mods , but I hope to figure out what I am going to do after that.
