This is something we have touched on in the past. I would like everyone's opinion and hopefully pics on setting up a 35-40 Ford frame for the ideal towcar. I want to pull the Fly with my 36 P/U in the future. I was thinking of a rear airbag only setup with no compressors or any of the valves etc. Just 2 bags, some line and a filler valve (shrader). I Want to retain the stock gas tank and location. I thought about incorporating the hitch into the rear frame crossmember (which is usuall trashed anyway, from prev. owners trying to pull trailers from that area) what do you think? I am planning on starting on a complete different frame, to get my roller chassis.
My dad has a trailer hitch on his 1938 ford That is pretty stout he used to pull a 22ft Travel Trailer with it and have towed car trailers a # of times. I will try to get pics of it and post later this week. He also is using regular air shocks off of a VW to a 55 chevy rear end and a stock gas tank.
I have a 57 Chevy rearend in it but I would like to put a 9 inch under it. I just don't want a big ole ugly hitch hanging down.....
heres the 35, 4" pipe bumper pull, i have pulled oversize loads thru 4 states for many years. 350/350/3 dueces, A/C, notice a theme? I'm gonna build another for my sons 60 Ford pickup w/460
my trucks have 9" rear axles. the bumpers are built by drilling 1/2" holes in 3/8" x 2 1/2" flat strap to match the original bumper brace holes in the frame, then I set the pipe on jackstands and begin welding
wedeter street rods makes a traler hitch that bolts to the very rear crossmember and has brackests that that go out to the outside of the frame rails. there is also a brace that goes up to the stock sping crossmember, going under the tank...it has a receiver so you can remove the tounge when not in use.. this is what i'd copy. i don't beleive they have a website so you could check it out , but i have their catalog and could scan in a picture of it for you
Root,I don't have the car anymore ,but on my 4D ford sedan I used a 1/4" by 2" flat steel that bolted on through the bumper bolts that followed the inside contour of the rear bumper,,,,used the same across the back section of the frame..........I used a 3/4" by 2 1/2" stock to run from just past the bumper to mount the ball and to the rear of the frame with two short pieces of the 3/4 by 2 1/2. Sorry I don't have any pictures ,but it was a clean lookin' hitch and pretty simple to make. HRP
sorry about the delay on getting the pictures, just now had a chance to post them. this is on my dads 38 ford. he used to pull a 22ft travel trailer with it until he sold the trailer. but he has towed car trailers with it with no problem. it is a 2x2 hitch and the license plate slides in it while not in use. it is mounted to the bumper and the tube runs under the stock gas tank and is welded to a peice of heavy angle iron in the front that goes from one side of the frame to the other.
puts it in the trunk. He has not had any problems yet!! he has had this trailer hich on it since 1977.
only when hes pulling a trailer and you cant see it then anyway. in illinois if you run a plate the same year of your car it is legal if you have your current plate in the car with you so as long has you have the plate with you its alright. but he has never had a problem with it.
Hmmm...around here if you even use one of those flip down license plate deals it is "illegal display of tag". I had a buddy that got a ticket in one of the 80's El Caminos with the plate on the tailgate. He had it flipped down. Thanks for the pics. I have the frame here at the house now. Gonna start the build soon.
