i just purchased a 1935 dodge coupe with no frame,my question is would you build one out of square tube or is there a newer style frame that would fit, thanks ahead of time for any input. johnny b
If you have the skills and equipment then build a frame. Chances of finding a suitable oem piece would seem slim. .
That's probably a frame made both in '35 and '36, and for both the Dodges and Plymouths, so I'd think that they are out there. Get with some MOPAR club guys and they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who has one. Still, if someone has such an oem frame, he has probably "saved" it for 25+ years, and won't let it go for nothing.
Years ago I had a conversation with a guy about a frame for a 35 Plymouth. He thought a frame from a mid 30s Ford might be close enough, since I had to replace the floors on my Plymouth. I ended up building a frame from 2" x 3" tubing for my 35. Much cheaper then buying something, and I could put things where and how I wanted them. Wasn't pretty (strong, but not pretty), but wasn't visible with full fenders. Worked OK, we put over 66,000 miles on the Plymouth. Gene
Jab, 35 and 36 are different frames. Plymouth is shorter than Dodge as they have different wheelbases. With all that being said, anything can be made to work, just depends on your abilities and budget. If it were me, I would either find the correct frame or build one. I wouldn't adapt something else, but if you do find something dimensionally close, let us know. Bob
On that 35, i used a Volare front clip. It was too wide, set the front tires right at the fender edge. I ended up spreading the fenders out a couple inches on both sides to set the tires in the fenders the way i wanted them to sit.
