    What I found after a quick inspection was a rubber vacuum boot dry rotted and my fuel pressure and only 1.5 pounds. After fixing those two items
    I drove the car on Wednesday to the shop (about 30 miles round trip) and it did great with no issues. I thought for a second it didn't have the "nut" behind it it usually did but I thought I was just being hypercritical.

    Then yesterday I was going to attend a friend's memorial service and since he was a local hot rod legend, I thought it would be nice to take the car (and hope God gets it to and from). Drove great there and almost all the way back before it started sputtering, popping and coughing wanting to stall out under load.

    I pulled over to put a little gas to make sure that wasn't the problem and it drove a little further before making a fuss again. I then sat on side of road trying to clear it out for a few minutes. At that point I was a mile from home so I revved the **** out of it, and proceeded up the hill and was able to coast down and into my driveway before it wanting to die (thank God!).

    This morning I pulled a plug to find this. Looks like rings didn't seat??? That and a little tuning and rejecting on carbs would be my guess.

    All the plugs look like that? You may have a negative intake vacuum problem. Could be a warped intake manifold.

    Lots of oil on the threads;

    Like was just posted; could be intake ****ing oil past the gasket at the valley..or..

    -what is the breather system setup? is it correct?

    if that checks out ok;

    -guides or rings. Get a leakdown test done with motor warm.

    Sure looks like typical sbc guide problem, unless the breather system is wrong.

    The other running problem; I still think you have symptoms of fuel starvation or vapor lock. The oil buildup on the plugs normally will let the car run ok at speed, but will get a skip at idle as one or two electrodes get fouled badly from very heavy buildup that looks like carbon.. sort of.

    Breather system is the stock '56 Road Draft tube.

    if you have oil on the threads of all the plugs, that should eliminate oil getting into the intake gaskets because it would have so much vacuum loss that it would not idle well.

    So, guides were all too loose on the rebuild, or moly rings never seated. Leakdown should tell. If there is too much leakdown, pull the cap off of the oil filler tube to listen for air hissing during each cyl test.

    I still keep thinking guides. Did they machine the intake guide bosses for press-on Perfect Circle stem seals?

    I see oil on the threads too, and fought with a manifold leak for months on the Plymouth Getting stuff set up. It would always break the gasket and leak into the valley and draw oily air from there. I also notice that the plus are super dark as well which would tell me that the mains might be a ***ch too big. That's what I was getting at earlier when I asked if you had done mid to upper range clean cut and plug read. At that point you had mentioned that you hadn't driven it at highway speeds much.

  10. You have a few problems....
    Run a leak down test and compression test to find out where the oil is coming from, guides or rings. Your timing is too retarded and your mixture is too lean.
