Good day all. Wondering if anyone would know what these holes are for in the outer edges of the back of this '35 Ford? Not the center set for the spare tire carrier. What I am curious about is what the outer 2 holes are for? They aren't just a round drilled hole for a light (I don't think anyways but correct me if I'm wrong) someone at some point took care to file them into a specific shape for some reason. The car is very original & unrestored, the holes have been there for a long time & both are clocked in the same direction. If you know what was mounted there I would much appreciate knowing!
That was my thought too, although I don't see any evidence of wiring & there are no other signal lights. It's just the shape of the hole that's throwing me off, I would assume if it was a light it would just be a round hole but somebody took time to file those specific shapes in. I looked at as many pictures of old aftermarket lights as I could find but I couldn't find one that had a base the shape of those holes.
The holes are for sockets like these. You pinch them from the sides to pull them out of the holes from the back to change the bulb without taking off the lens from the outside. The notched hole allowed the orientation of the bulb to the lens and the filament and to prevent the sockets from turning These examples are from a 1950 Ford taillight.
