So I am getting an old truck that has been in the family for years, but I am not sure it is what they say it is. It was titled in 51 as a 1936 ford pickup. I was given these numbers off of the truck, where they came from is unknown, they could have been off of the bell housing or the engine. They are 18-2317048. Does anyone know what the year of the motor is? Any differences I. The 35 and 36 that I may be able to find to ensure it is what they say it is? Any help would be great! Thanks
That is a 1936 number, so quite conceivably is the original serial for your pickup. Number would originally have been atop trans bellhousing and copied onto left framerail in general engine compartment area. Floorboard MAY have a little plate you can take off to see trans number, frame number will likely take some work with wirebrush and flashlight to see. Any flathead will go in there and there are no numbers on the engines to match... First look: If engine has 21 head studs, water pumps at fronts of heads, and I think "48" prefix heads it might be original...if 24 studs, it is somewhat later and will need considerable looking to distinguish the many possibilities.
Thanks Bruce! Just working out the details on getting the truck, and wanted to check it out a bit. The next step I guess is finding out if it has the babbet bearings or not.
OK...next look at front, near engine mounts/water inlets. 2 big blockoff plates means '37 replacement motor...none means '32-36. Look at front right corner of pan...funny little lump with a hole in it?? If so, '35-36.
Also look on the intake surface, on driver side, near the rear of the engine; Somewhere between # 7 and #8 cyls. Ford did number engines at the engine plant, before shipment to the vehicle assembly point. Most of those are likely gone, due to the intake deck being surfaced during remanufacturing. 4TTRUK
