1936 ford trans

    trying to convert my '36 toploader to open driveshaft. Anyone have any suggestions or knowledge on this.:rolleyes:

    you will need to find an open drive transmisssion for donor parts. usually you can just swap the output shaft and rear bearing retainer, but with your early trans, i think there is enough difference in the outputshaft that will end up swapping most if not all the guts. which means you will also have to find a 39 shift tower as the front fork will not fit the late ge****t. its early yet so someone plz correct me if im wrong...

    Don't think you can do it with Ford open drive parts unless you convert to late gears, and you need the right version of those...If you're going to open drive, why use the early trans? Get something with more speeds, preferably an overdrive. Only reason to keep the early trans is for the suspension benefits, gone with the open drive shaft.

    Why bother, By the time you switch all the parts over, you did not gain anything. You should have used the 42-7 pick up trans to start with, it has the same bolt pattern and the good gears, all you have to do is make a new rear trans support.
