Projects 1936 Lincoln Zephyr Sedan 4door to 2door Conversion.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fruitygreen, Jan 8, 2025.

  1. He bought a cleaner 4 door than mines. Pretty sure steps he took to convert 4door to 2door are what im about to mimmick.

All I need now is the dimensions of the 2door.

    Anyone could provide them?

Appreciate it. I could make it any size I want but, would like to make it close to original.

Wasn't this one built from a 4 door with a Pontiac or Chevy fastback roof?

  3. Not sure

If no one comes thru with an exact measurement for you, you could use a known dimension (eg. wheel) in a photo of a 2 door, and use the same scale to calculate the length of the door.

  5. I wouldn’t worry about an exact 2 door length.
Take a side shot of the car and start moving things around.
You can hillbilly photoshop using a blade to cut up a copy of the side shot and place it over the original. Extend the door by cutting it out longer from another pic.
You can chop and move things around.
A scale can be generated either by scaling a known part such as a wheel or laying out a grid with tape on the car before taking the pic.
That grid can be used to scale changes

  6. Lol! I think really simple dimension would do it for me.

The title of this thread is a little misleading.

1936 Lincoln Zephyr Sedan 4door to 2door Conversion.

  8. I know , but if I had Titled it " 4door to 4door conversion" , i'll probably get the the same reaction.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

  9. For years I wondered what a 49-51 merc 4 door would look like with the rear door lengthened to get rid of the awkward rear door vent window area.
A week or so ago, Steve Stanford Designs posted this on his FB page
    IMG_4324.jpeg
    looks good.
You might want to look at the rear hinges from a merc. They are suicide from the factory.
Could possible use em for your project.
You could contact Steve Stanford or a few others for a side shot rendering of your ideas.

I would just make the door and side windows equal lengths. Measured from the bottom of the window openings from the back edge of the 1/4 window to the front of the door window...divide that number in half with the tape measure still there and mark that (half) number on the body, and that will be your door length.

I wouldn't worry about trying to copy what Ford did, as I don't find it particularly attractive anyway. It looks like they didn't want to pay out for different rear quarter panel pressings, which is probably why the two door has these oddly long side windows. You can do better. Make it your own.
Quick two door photoshop. I didn't touch the roof line, but I shortened the side windows a good bit...

‘36 and ‘37 Coupe Sedans are rare, like hens teeth. Seven or eight ‘36’s and perhaps twice as many ‘37’s. To get the measurement you’re seeking, you might try the Lincoln Zephyr FB Group. Another option would be to call a curator at the Gilmore Museum and ask them to measure the width of the one on display there at the Lincoln annex.

If you really want it to have 4 doors, how about something like this?

As much as I like this, as a kind of '40 Ford coupe look, having four doors and no back seat space seems a little redundant. Did you do a 2dr version?

@James D, is your 2 doorized version actually a 4 dr as that's what he wants to do with the 4 dr he has...reconfigure it to a 4dr with 2dr lengths. I didn't see a seam on the quarter on the 2 dr and I think he wants the rear doors suicide which I doubt is possible with the rear opening riding in an arc over the fender. Nice work by the way and to all the others trying to get something visible going. As was mentioned the Title of the Thread is kinda misleading.

I didn't, I tried to do one using the original top part of the rear quarter window because I like that shape better, but I couldn't make it look right, I had to start over.

The back seat space in my version would definitely be very limited, you could do jump seats or something "club coupe" sized, wouldn't be real comfortable for grown adults but it would make for an interesting effect.

I realise he mentioned a four door, but I don't really like four doors and more importantly it would be far more work to end up with something way less attractive. If you have any kind of normal length rear quarter window, it'll be pivoting into the car when the door swings open. You can't get a hinge far enough back to make that work. So I just did what I would do, took the more simple and better looking route and made a two door.

As long as pixels are free and I don't have to do the bodywork, how about this version of James D's excellent 2 door sedan, basically with some of the roof and trunk crown reduced (hope you don't mind I stole your picture to try this).

    thf9059811.jpg

And a 4 door version of that with a very crude door cut line because I'm just not that good at freehanding details into these renderings. Gives a kind of Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow look. Would be a shit-ton of work but does look nice I think.

  20. The appeal for me in a 4 door is we can load more guys to cruise with . Like a 4 door pickup. You got a purpose with the truck and then you got the gang with you.

In a 36 Zephyr you got instant style and then you got friends to roll with. I do get 2 doors , hotrod and bold. Im old and thinking about purpose too.

Lol! When I go to costco , how hard is it to load stuff in a 2 door?

Hey we all have to suffer a little for our art don't we?
Anyway, it's not a problem, but you'll need to de-suicide the rear doors. I guess without rear handles it's not too conspicuous. thf905982.jpg

Good thing I doubled all the posts as I was going to post one of his vids as well.

  24. Here’s a pic from one that’s says “3 inch chop”
Only side pic for it. So not very good IMG_4273.jpeg
Would take some work in the c-pillar area to reduce the window size. Or lay the rear portion of roof and trunk down more.
Like shown by the other pics posted

Just want to mention that from a technical standpoint, this is a really beautifully rendered door gap. Not sure if everyone here realizes how difficult that is. Or maybe I just don't know how to do it right. Either way though, very nice work.

I'd go for the Tudor look, it would be way too much work to stretch the front doors just to leave it a four door, plus it wouldn't be any easier to get in and out of if you have to squeeze in a smaller door opening and climb over the fender.
I wouldn't be afraid to cut up a 4 door, they aren't that rare. I had 3 of them laying around my yard at one time.

  28. It’s already a 4 door. :) No reason to “disguise” that.
whack that roof and lay the rear section forward, lose the rear side window.

    Would be super cool

  29. This jeep door is a lil bigger than the front door of 4 door Zephyr and still is not comfortable. Jist trying to open it up a bit. With a front door stretch.
    20250114_115825.jpg
My idea would be a rear door suicide and like the jeep the seat is about fender depth , and so your feet be forward of it and when you step it is already cleared.
