Hi there. Interested in hearing from anyone with a 1936 or 1937 Packard 120 straight 8 transmission in their hotrod . Are there, transmission differences between 36 and 37? Love to hear any experiences from old days with them too. Thank you Ben , Queensland,Australia
I believe I was wrong when I said the '36 may be different from the '37. A search seems to indicate that Packard transmissions were the same from '35-37. There is a wrinkle, however. Before 1939, there were two versions of the Packard transmission; one for the 6 cylinder cars and on for the eights and V12's. Make sure of what you have. I have heard the 6 cylinder versions were weak.
The V12 had a different one again . my 3 speed Transmission, originally came out of a 120 series straight 8 coupe
Guys, please help me understand the interest in the Packard transmission- is it strength, adaptability, gearing?
Strength AND gearing. The first and second gear ratios weren't far off from the coveted Zephyr ge****ts that people were stuffing into Ford transmissions.
The big packard trans is every bit as strong as the big buick or cad lasalle and has a tall first gear
Thank you all- that is great info! I know of a row of 36-38 120's that are slowly returning to the earth... just don't know if they have 6's or 8's (or anything under the hoods)- will have to check the next time I visit
I know a guy in Australia, who has a Right hand drive factory 1936 straight 8 ,120 series coupe sold new here exported
@Benl935truck I'm in victoria, and have 2 of these transmissions and a flathead to Packard adapter and a GM to Packard adapter plate, and lots of transmission spares that I have for sale. I'm sending some stuff to Queensland, and can see if this stuff could be included if you're interested
