I got the tail pan section taken apart, sandblasted, and now Im working out all the dents. The metal is really solid except for the bottom. But we are going to change that anyway.

Man, that tail section looked like a bag of walnuts. It's a good thing it's in your hands. So I guess you find it easier to remove the section and work in on the bench instead of on the car??

Defiantly easier to work on it off the car. With it off I removed everything that was blocking my access to the outer skin. That way I can completely fix all the issues, and then re-attach it to the car.

I removed the rear section of a '32 sedan for similar repairs when I had my shop. So many 'walk-in-critics' forced me to close the shop for 2 days to finish the work!
These self-appointed critics were the product of a local weekly '50s nite', most had just bought their first 'street rod project'...
Wish some of you guys were around then.

  12. Just stumbled across this thread, very impressive work Chris!

A little deja vu for me. My '36 roadster started out as a roadster cowl top, two roadster doors, and the roadster tulip panel from Dee Wescott's loft. Then mated to a 5w bottom that needed a lot of the same work as this one. I picked up the project after a hack had done some of the work and had Swedberg work some of his metal magic to make it right. This project is at another level of workmanship with all the craftsmanship required. Looks great! Looking forward to seeing how you treat the deck area.

BTW, truth be told, there are probably more converted 5w coupes out there than most realize. It's a natural way to salvage the roadster unique pieces.

Have you been using a shrinking disc over this rear section?

    Great work.

    No bumpers? Or...?

  25. That would be a helluva challenge item to make in one piece, from the looks of it...

    Amazing reconstruction.

  28. WOW I am impressed with the quality of work you do.I only just found this thread.

I used to use engineers blue or marking out ink too when I was metal finishing it works a treat doesnt it.Makes it much easier to see what your doing when filing up.
