I have a 1937 Big Buick 3 speed with OLDs gears and open tailshaft and a 1952 Cadillac 331 V8 engine. Could these be used together with some adapter? The Buick transmission in now connected to a 1954 Buick bellhousing. The Engine is going in my 1934 Ford 5-Window Coupe. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If it is indeed the heavier transmission with the six bolt top cover, it should bolt to a 1951-63 Oldsmobile standard shift bellhousing, which would bolt to your '52 Cadillac engine.
Check the input shaft length as Buick had a longer/shorter input. Best to know now what it is before you ***emble everything for the project. I run the same set up only behind my Olds 324. If you need the Olds measurement I have one in the shop I could check. What year Olds gear is in the ******?
Shaft is 6" from bell housing case. I was told the transmission had Olds gears but I don't know how to tell. Tail shaft is definitely Olds. Thanks.
That input shaft looks to be correct but I am not able to find that tail stock number. I suspect it is a 57-61 gear. The output shaft will be larger than the 51-56 piece. Without measuring mine I would say it is in the 1.250 range. Here is a great thread on these trannies that will take you thru the conversion process. 37-38 Buick trans with early olds gears etc | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
