Does anyone make a repop tail pan for the rumble seat coupe? I've been digging for a coupla days now with no luck. The one available for the other versions of the coupe don't fit the rumble seat coupe.....ken.....
got pics ? maybe folks here could ***ist on fabing one. Built one last year for a Plymouth even though new ones are available, I have learned the parts you build fit better than the ones you buy.
I've got a stock '37 Sports Coupe (rumble seat) - if you need any measurements or pics, I'll be glad to help. You're also more than welcome to come north and take a look at it yourself, but it's quite a drive up. There's not much available in Sports Coupe specific parts. Only around 8500 cars were made and not too many survived. About the only place you might have a chance of finding the piece you need, might be EMS, butI doubt they have it. The demand just doesn't justify the tooling costs.
tagman is right to rare to make a panel, we only get 2 or 3 requests a year. otherwise we have every other part for the car www.emsautomotive.com
How close are the parts EMS has to the one you need? Can theirs be modified to fit? I built one for my '37 Buick. I could have bought one from Kemp's for $350 but I needed so many patch panels that no one made so I just made my own.
thanks for the replys. it's for a drop-in local customer from yesterday. haven't laid eyes on the car. if it's a fab item we can handle that in house(rutter's rod shop). just seeing if it was available for the customer. thanks again for the help fellas.....ken.....
I also have a 37 Sports Coupe with Rumble Seat that I need a tail pan for. Has anyone here had any luck in finding them or do they have to be fabricated? Is the geometry different between the 37 deluxe and the sport coupes that the stamped pans will not work? Any help anyone can give me, (measurements, etc.) would be great!
I have a '37 Sports Coupe that's stock, but I don't have access to a business coupe to check the tail pans against each other. For starters, the tail pan would be much taller on a SC, as the trunk lid on a BC would be longer than the rumble seat opening. If the lower section of the tail pan are the same between the SC & BC, depending on how high you need to replace, they might be the same. Sorry I can't add any better insight, but if you could get some measurements from a BC, I'd be happy to check them against mine. If you'd like to look at one an are anywhere in the upstate New York area (I'm in Rochester), you're welcome to look at mine. -Bob
In the 70's I did a Rumble Seat conversion on my 37 Chevy Business Coupe. I agree with my friend TagMan that the BC panel would be much shorter than the SC panel. Depending on how much you need to replace, the BC panels which are available may be enough to cover the area of your repair. Pictures are of my BC to SC conversion that you can compare to your build.
i fixed a later model coupe by using the top of a AD chevy pickup front fender. the fender has a section across the top edge that matches the arch pretty good. at least from what i remember, it was twenty..... no .....closer to thirty years ago.
This is not a bad option if you cannot find the correct repair panel. You just need to look around for metal shapes that might be close or can be worked to fit your repair. On a current 33 Plymouth build we could only find a fibergl*** rear filler panel. I did see a similar contour on an old 70 ElCamino quarter panel. I cut the section I needed, made a few additional adjustments and was able replace the fibergl*** part with a desirable steel replacement.
Thanks Tagman and RayMay. That was thought as well. I know that you can get tail pans for the BC from emsautomotive with the trunk cutout. I don't have a lot that needs replacing so my thought was to trim the pan to remove the trunk cutout and fit that to the car. What I am not sure about is if all the curves will still match between the SC and the BC. I have attached some photos of my pan woes.
....since the rear fenders are all the same on 37's, I'm thinkin the BC tailpan would be the same as a rumble seat car....that's if you only need the bottom section of yours.
I have finally decided to have one fabed for the SC. I do have another question. Looking for floor pan replacements. From my research, the SC and the BC coupe are different because of the rumble seat. I would ***ume they would be the same as the convertible, but can't find any parts for those either. Anyone know if the pans are the same for the 2 door sedans since they all have the gas filler in the fender like the SC?
Greetings, Saw this old thread and thought I’d give you a shout to see if you still have the 37. I have a 37 sport coupe in excellent shape inherited from my wife’s grandfather. In the 1950s he took the rumble seat out to have more room for fishing gear and then it got lost in the mix and disappeared. So I need to recreate one. I’d live to get detailed pictures . I live in Charlotte NC. Thanks in advance if you have any ideas . Email is mark -at- mananutrition.org.
Considering how little you'd get by starting with a business coupe tail drop repair panel, I'd probably not even consider going that route. The '37-'38 Chev business coupes have such a small tail drop below the trunk opening, that unless you were doing a business coupe it wont really be much of an advantage to start with.
Sorry, Mark, but I sold my 37 two years ago in a fit of stupidity, which I regretted almost immediately and continue to do so to this day.
