    Fantasia in B&W

Which reminds me if anybody has a favorite color photo they want turned into B&W for that old time look send me a pm and I will convert them for you.

Bob Panella’s candy-red pickup was a big beneficiary of John Mazmanian’s switch from Chevy to Hemi power. When the Stockton trucker learned of Big John’s decision, Bob hustled down to L.A. and purchased the supercharged 327 Chevy that powered Mazmanian’s B/Modified Sport Corvette and, briefly, his Willys coupe.

Shipped cross-country to KS Pittman for the big Western winter meets, Chuck Stolze’s surprising 9.70-second, 151-mph Willys swept A/GS honors at both Phoenix and Pomona, set both ends of the AHRA record, and won AHRA’s Little Eliminator. Dave Zeuschel built the 420-inch early Chrysler

The biggest upset of NHRA’s biggest show saw Jack Merkel’s month-old Willys hand George Montgomery his first-ever Nationals A/GS defeat, snapping a streak started in 1959. Jack’s 9.98/142.18 topped Ohio George’s 10.07/134.73, after which Merkel fell to eventual class winner Doug Cook.

Floyd and Ralph Grist’s shortened, Ford-powered Willys, perennially the world’s quickest and fastest unblown gasser. Later this season, Floyd Grist would puncture the 10-second barrier for unblown, full-fendered cars.

Tim Woods (left), Doug Cook (right), and Fred Stone campaigned three Super Gassers in ’64: this Swindler A, the blue Swindler B, and the Dark Horse ’33 Willys driven by Chuck Finders. In the background is Riverside International Raceway

Another showing that the "Big Guys" flat towed too. this time ...
Yes, even the fastest door-slammers were typically flat-towed in 1964. Shown swapping out John Mazmanian’s treaded rear tires (foreground) on RIR’s Turn Four are current and future pilots Bones Balough (at rear fender) and Richard Siroonian (far right), Big John’s nephew. The team earned both the A/GS and Best Appearing Car trophies

    Today's find :p

Patience was required at the NHRA Nationals. Hollywood, Florida's Bill Carroll (left) and Roger Taylor wait on the hood of their 1956 Ford F100 in the staging area. Driver Bill won C/Gas class that year at Indy. A 292 mouse with Hilborn injection and a BorgWarner four-speed made it go.

M.A. Madden and son, Bill, gained a national reputation with their homebuilt 1940 Willys sedan out of Anniston, Alabama. Dubbed The Chicken Pickers (Madden owned a poultry farm and processer), the '40 ran as a Gasser and in D/Altered, and was an NHRA record-holder and serious threat at any race.

Hanover, Pennsylvania's Charlie Hill and his legendary Filthy Forty Willys was the C/Gas class winner at the Nationals in 1962, with Pork Zartman pulling the gears. Hill's small-block Chevy sported Hilborn injection and a Vertex magneto. The Filthy's less-than-sanitary appearance was entirely intentional. The car was nationally known and nationally feared.

Just want to set the record straight. Pork and the Filthy were the runners up at the Nationals in 1962. Someone didn't put the radiator cap on good and it blew off half way down the track. Pork won the Nationals in 1963. I love the pictures of the car after he won with mud dripping off the fenders. The license plate on Pork's regular car was I1Indy63.

loudbang, the car that you posted above is either a 1935 or 1936 Ford 3 window coupe. Notice how the roof height and tail proportions are different than a Willys.

I just saw the louvers on the hood sides too. But if you look at the red willys below it the window shape, the body lines back to the rear fender, and the shape of that rear fender sure are CLOSE but the slope of the very rear of the roof where it meets the body is not right either.
