Great photo Hutch, which clearly illustrates the difference in the height of the front windshield of the 1941/42 vs. the 1937-1940 cars. The late windshield opening is nearly 1" shorter which was necessitated by the change from roof mount to cowl mount wipers. Willys also added a character line around the 1941/42 windshield opening. The windshield garnish moldings do not interchange between the two series.

Are you sure about this? The sedan windshield was 1 inch taller in 41 and 42 but the coupes were all the same. I just went thru my collection of garnish moldings today and was able to switch 37 and 41 coupe windshield moldings with no difference.

  13. Weasel, you and Dave are two of my favorite Willys guys on here, but I have to go with Dave on this one. I have some original advertisement that tells of a greater percentage of viewing area in the "New Willys Americar". Indeed the sedans had a larger windshield. I wasn't sure about the coupes, but any way I look at that picture, I can't see a difference in the coupes. What you will see is that on a 41 that little extra reveal on the lower third of the windshield post matches the one on a sedan. This makes me believe that the coupe roofs never changed, and they grafted it on to the new 41 cowl. I have only had one 41 coupe, and sold it before I built it, but have had several earlier ones.
I have fitted a 41 sedan moulding to a coupe by trimming the lower half...I am sure that the upper half pieces were the same length...but I am getting old so its been a while back. Only Willys guys that have climbed around those car like the two of you would know those subtle differences. I have lots of experience with the 37-42 ones as well, and am now working on an earlier (36), and they ARE different. Keep up the good dialogue! You could probably spend weeks discussing the different latches and handles they all had. And what about the '39s with 38 dashes and round guages. Makes me think that just like they make sausage, anything left on the table gets put into the next batch!

Its amazing that you had two real coupes at a local cruise in, unless you live in Southern California. That blue 40 is a gem!

I thought I had an interior pic but I can't seem to find it. That one was an old gasser originally it was ran mostly around here back in the 60's, That's an old picture of it hanging off the front bumper. I ran in to it's new owner at the GG's show in Charlotte back in October, It's a beautiful car he even made a miniature for his newborn son.

Thanks Mark. John sure does have a knack for drag racign photography. Every one of those pics are straight out of the camera, no editing (I don't know how, LOL!!!).
