I say its a 37 because no drip rails. Remember one thing about these old coupes, most are pieced together from several cars since a lot were old drag cars and were gutted and lightened up with fiberglass parts. That's what's been happening with all the original sedans, being robbed of parts to rebuild old steel coupes.

My personal opinion is they were plenty strong for a light drag car. When you start putting in a blown Hemi or all iron big block and do wheelie's or drive on streets with pot holes that's when they bend. I have never seen a axle break only bend but, have seen the spindles brake many times. I put a 2 inch tube axle in mine with 37 to 41 Ford spindles because I have a blown 392 and will drive on the streets, I love the look of a drilled original beam axle but I am afraid to use it. I do have an original one in my parts supply.

I built that maroon chopped Austin about 14 years ago and sold it to Jeff Cryan when I found my first Willys coupe. It was a great running street car, best E.T. was high 11's and got great gas mileage, helps when it weighs 2400 lbs.

  7. No kidding ? Jeff's son Steve pretty much drove the Austin all last year and even won an event with it. The earlier picture of the Succubus Willys you posted belongs to Mike which is the guy in the white t-shirt in the first photo I posted of Harvy's white Willys......small world

Thanks for posting the nice picture from Des Moines...my friend Larry (red '40) and I always park off the beaten path, and not very many make it down to that end of the fair grounds. I have nearly 40 K miles on that coupe now( Larry has over 50 on his), and it's been quite reliable. Will have another one going soon, but not soon enough to bring to Des Moines this year.
    Any way, thanks

Hey Kev, is that first picture the Costa and Stewart Willys when it came out of retirement in the 80's?

  14. Yes, used to see it racing at the NDRA meets at Fremont.

Here are a couple of photos of Aussie utes and a panel van that have been sent to me recently - thought I'd share. Note the louvers on the panel van....

Here for comparison with the Holden and T.J Richards bodied utes is a Mitchell bodied version - note the use of US pickup doors as opposed to Aussie built coupe doors on the Holden bodies....

Weasel, the grey with black fenders truck from Pa. is as nice as the pics make it look. I'd bet this picture was taken at the Macungie truck show, it's from that area.
