I am installing a wiper arm assembly on my 1938 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup and have NO idea how this thing goes on. My truck is all original and it has the original vacuum wiper motor. The output shaft from the wiper motor is a smooth (no serations) with a hole drilled through it. The wiper arm is a spring loaded affair with metal rod that protrudes through the end with a 90 degree bend on it.

How on earth do these things install?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

I don't know what kind of setup yours is on the blade end, but the motor end needs a lead collar which is pinned on through that hole in the shaft. Then the arm slides on over the collar pretty much like a modern one.

    OldBuzzard:

Thank you... that must be my problem, I do not have the lead collar on the output shaft of the motor... it is missing.

Do you have a photo of one of these collars, and do you know where I could purchase one?

    Thanks,

I don't have a picture. Even if I did I haven't figured out how to get one on here. I've tried a few times & nothing works. The collar is a pretty simple thing. Just round with a hole in the middle that is a snug fit on the motor shaft and an outside diameter that the arm presses onto. A pin hole through it. Anyway, I looked in Chevs of the 40's & Carter. I don't see anything there. You could make one out of brass or maybe even aluminum. The pin can be anything that fits the hole in the shaft fairly tight, a light press fit. It would seem that the above mentioned places would have them for their new & rebuilt wiper motors. I wish I could be more help.

I will try Jim Carter tomorrow... that is where I purchsed the arm from... hopefully they have one of these things they would be willing to sell. Thank you for your help!

The collar is probably made of pot metal or some such stuff. It looks like lead but that would be too soft.

  7. does the angled rod fit through the hole? on some early wiper arms the rod goes through the hole and the spring and "cover" pulled up over the end of the shaft and hooked over the the rod or into a groove on the shaft.

if you got the orginal style arm,it has a spring inside .one end of the spring goes to the arm, other end goes to the wiper pin.with arm held away from glass you put spring into pin then put wiper arm down.my 37 is like that, also my 35 pontiac.the adapter that makes them to splined shaft, more modern style comes up on ebay from time to time.i have a few pairs ,if yo need them pm me .22.00 pair good luck . jack

The motor end of a stock '38 Chev pkp wiper arm is as I described above. No hooks or grooves, just a collar pinned to the motor shaft. '38 cars could have been different. My '39 coupe is a whole different thing.

It appears that '38 Chevy cars had the wipers at the bottom of the windshield, probably used the same linkage setup as the '39. The truck wiper is mounted at the top of the windshield and the arm drives directly off the motor shaft. Different setup.

The 90 degree bent part of the wiper arm goes in the hole in the end of the wiper motor and the cover on the arm slides down over the end of the wiper motor keeping the arm on the end of the motor shaft. I think there is also a spring on the wiper arm that keeps the cover over the end of the wiper motor.
