I believe the 1938 Ford cabover truck headlamps are the same as the 1935 car headlamps. My questions are: 1) What do I need to complete these? I know I need the glass lens and gasket, but what holds the reflector aligned in the housing? 2) Can I convert to 12-volt bulbs? I have the two 6-volt sockets for the bulbs in the reflector.
The reflector is just held in place after the ring is installed. You should be able to buy a 12 Volt socket at NAPA. HRP
Is there nothing to keep the reflector aligned so the ambler bulb is at the bottom? Otherwise I can rotate the reflector in any position.
I always thought the 35 car and 35-36 truck lights were the same and were the shallow buckets. I don't recall seeing the "amber" bulb in any of the early reflectors. I'd research it in the online catalogs. I did convert a pair by going to the junkyard and getting the metal rings from a Ford pickup/van that used the large bulbs. Attached them to the 35 bucket, set the bulb in place and installed the stock trim and lens on in its stock position. Tim
the basic headlight buckets are the same. however the 1940, & 1941 truck headlight buckets came with sealed beams from the factory. if you want to use your reflectors, on the back are 3 tabs that take spring clips to orient the reflector in the proper position. I have 6 spring clips that are original equipment, and if you want them, you can have them for free, just send me your address. nick
Tony, I think I have two spare later model COE buckets with the inner adjustment pieces, so you could run sealed beam headlights. The inner part on one might be a bit rusty, but should be repairable. Let me know if you are interested and I'll dig them out and send you some pictures.
