1939/40 Chevy truck Grill verses 39/40 COE grill

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldschoolantiqueauto, May 25, 2012.

  1. Hi all, I have a 39 Chevy 1.1/2 ton COE truck cab that I am restoring. My grill is all there but it will never be straight enough to re-chrome. Any one have a grill or parts for grill? I could also use a few other body parts?? Call me if possible,

My '40 GMC grill was trash so I just made a custom grill.
The grill that was in it had a stainless bicycle fender in place of the bottom bar. That's the contour of them. They were about 21" in circumference but there's no way you could bend them to the flatter arc because of the depth of the compound curve pressed into them.

You would have better luck shaping a virgin piece of sheet stainless.
If I had one perfect undented untwisted grill bar would make a two part rebar reinforced cement mold off of it and use it to press new bars.
Put locator pins and tubes in the mold halves to keep them in alignment as it presses.
press some heavy paper first so you can flatten that out to see what arc to cut the sheet metal to before pressing it.
Clay up any undercuts in the back of the pattern bar before making that mold side before casting it and wax or grease the hell out of it so it will press the metal without scratching it.
Good luck! If you do that you just learned a new craft!
