1939 Chev Gasser - style

Stripped out, ready to start body work.

 

I felt the fin spacing on the header block off plates was a bit too close together so I made some with the fins further apart. Made a finned fuel pump block off while I was going.

 

Modified the pedal box to take the clutch pedal and master cylinder

 

Is that frame not boxed?

The frame is a "top hat" design, I've just added cross members to the original rails.

 

Lots of little jobs being ticked off the list,

Made a new centre for the steering wheel

Made a switch panel for the shifter surround

Currently giving the Muncie a freshen

 

Well it's off for final body work and paint!

I've done almost all of the jobs on it I can think of, while I was waiting for paint I have shelves and boxes of finished parts and assemblies just waiting to go on the car. Hopefully it comes back before christmas- the painter is very busy. I will be full on into it as soon as it comes home. There is still a lot to do, and still some money to spend, but it will be fun.

 

Thanks mate, it's been a while off the road, but I've built a lot of other stuff along the way. Definitely excited to see it progressing again.

Progress has been slow, my painter has a lot on, but there is only one car ahead of mine now. Got the moulds made and the individual bonnet halves made in glass. We'll be fitting them up tomorrow to get the spacing to make it all one piece.

 

I also made an Aussie version of the iconic "Big Daddy" Dixco tach

 

Haven't posted for a while, because not much has happened with the project. Then it's finally my car's turn at the painters, when I get the call …."You might want to come and have a look at this" Now I know the body on this car isn't great, and in defence of the original builder, it was built from junk just to go racing and has survived this way for about 30 years. When I saw the rear corners of the cab, I couldn't leave it that way.

 

The offending corners were cut out and replaced. I am a very novice metal shaper, but I am happy with the result. There will still be filler involved, but not nearly as much as what was there.

 

While the car was back for the cab repairs, we fitted the 2 fibreglass bonnet halves and made them into a one piece bonnet.

 

Bonnet is now fully glassed with structural rib and hole for scoop, and it's at the painter with the rest of the car.

 

Just went back and realized this project is 5 plus years in the making. Decided to update your photoshop that started it along.

 

Thanks mate, that's awesome. Yeah it's been a long time, actually, november this year it will have been off the road 7 years. Other projects keep getting in the way, some small, some large, some mine, some not. But as soon as it's back from the painter, it will be nothing else until it's finished, and I will enjoy every minute of it.

 

Well, it's been a long time, a year actually, but I've got most of the car back from the painter. Super happy with the result. I got just what I wanted, not perfect, just a nice old car painted black.

Got the chassis and suspension all cleaned up, Brake lines and fuel line fitted. After all these years I'm still amazed at how long the "simple" jobs take.

 

Did some work under the dash. Wipers are in as are the brake and clutch master setup.

 

Hope everyone had a good Christmas, too much of everything - family, friends, food, and fuel!
Got a bit more done on the days off. Front and rear glass is fitted. Set up the hydraulic clutch release bearing and fitted the motor and gearbox to the chassis.

 

Small block Chevys are easy right? Water pump wouldn't fit with timing cover, had to make spacers, top pulley fouled on the pump, another spacer, now too far forward, machine the back edge off the pulley, throw spacer away and modify water pump housing. Modify alternator housing and mount to get it all to line up. Not the hardest thing I've done by any means, but the simple stuff that should take an hour, ends up taking a day to do. Lucky I'm not paying an hourly rate for this.

 

Found the Original Body tag. The "FULL DOOR" had me wondering. Turns out, they sold budget models with roadster style doors called a "HALF DOOR UTILITY"

 

Dash is done and the wiring is mostly finished and tested, kept the modern bits hidden.
