I have tried to look, but like most on here have found, searching for anything with more than 1 word, is near impossible. so I just bought a 39 Chevy coupe. it has the axle which I would like to keep, but it has a rack and pinion bolted to it.. not a pretty site...and someone was driving it.!! so I need a steering box, with adapter.? what are my choices.? thanks

  2. If you do a search, that R&P can work just fine, it needs a slip joint in the steering shaft is all. Was just discussed the other day on here. Otherwise you need a box and a tie rod of some sort -

The original box was mounted inside the frame toward the front of the engine compartment. If you use a box that mounts on top of the frame you will open up a lot of room for wider engines. There are some older pickup boxes, Dodge rings a bell from the past, that mount on top of the frame and have the Pitman arm hanging down on the outside, but anything that mounts on top of the frame would be an improvement. The stock boxes are not all that great.

This place has something to adapt a Saginaw box.
