I had a question for everyone: I was wondering what would be the easiest way of replacing the bottom boxing plate on the ch***is? I have a hole in the driver rail on the bottom. The hole is about the size of a half dollar coin. I was thinking of trying to break the spot welds and replace the bottom plate but I cont want to deform or damage the top of the fram and lip ........ Thoughts ideas ? Maybe a very thin chisle? I just know drilling them out will be hard ...... Thank you all
Why try to replace a section - along with the spot welds - when you can just weld in a patch (flush) and grind it down to where you never could tell there was ever anything there?
Is it a rust hole? Or something someone cut out or torched at some time? If it's rusty or ragged, cut it out square, put in a square patch flush, weld it up and grind is smooth and you'll be done, with less chance of knocking the whole frame out of alignment.
I fixed one once by cutting out the offending bottom section with a small cutoff wheel and grinding through the spot welds. Then drilled new holes in the edges of the replacement to rosette weld like the original spots, and welded the ends solid. Grind and you'll never tell where the patch was. Just about as much welding as if you were to patch a small piece inside the original section.
Thank you for all of your responces ..... it is a rust hole it was under the front crossmember (found it when removing it) I will be taking all the shackles off on turkey day before dinner ..... Sounds like the best bet is to cut the section out ad patch as I dont want to tweak the rest of the ch***is .... Any other ideas?
