Technical 1939 Ford transmission open driveline question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jakespeed63, Sep 22, 2023.

  1. Hey Fellas, trying to sell this '39 Ford trans to a fellow Hot Rodder up in GA. Will this or can this be adapted to use with an open driveline configuration?? Will he have to get a different rear housing??
    Thanks.

You will need the output shaft and the rear housing (the one with the chunk missing) and gasket. The U-joint, sliding forward/reverse gear and bearing can be re-used. Be aware that these open drives have a speedometer cable connection that points straight up toward the floor. Can be a clearance problem and your buyer might need a 90 degree speedo drive. That would be his problem, though.

  5. As others have noted, Ford made the parts you need, since '42--'50 Ford pickups use an open drive version of the '39 toploader. Same trans case 78- prefix part number first used in '37. '42-'47 pickups use an open drive shaft version of the old Ford banjo rear.

The parts are also available from Hot Rod Works for the banjo rear end.
