With reinforcement backer in place. It is plug welded around the entire perimeter every 3/4" or so. Bolted on. The running board will have a rubber piece between the fender and edge of running board. The car is from upstate NY. It looked better because some of the rust was covered up with fiberglass mat and bondo and primered. The immediate goal ist to do the major rust repair, then get it blasted and primered, and then chop it. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app

Thanks Chris! I borrowed your idea of opening up and reshaping the wheel opening. Worked great and leaves a stock looking rolled edge. Born and raised in Switzerland (SZ) as well. Cool, 23 years in the US for me. From Bern. The idea about the larger wheel openings came from Lee Pratt. We where brainstorming on how to get the wheels out in case of a flat tire and he suggested to open the wheel openings. He hadn't done this before either. I initially thought it would look stupid but with skirts you could never tell.
Still really enjoying the craftsmanship and your ability to rebuild a car with a minimum of tools. Learning a lot watching your thread and appreciate the thought process given to each repair. There was a 40 Mercury when I was a kid that was on my way hunting in the mid sixties. The owner parked it so it was a big tease. & would not let anyone near it. The 39 & 40 Merc's are are great looking car and it is good to see life being returned to your car.
Interesting! I actually never like the look of the small wheel opening in addition to the fact that the skirts would have required more modification. I chose to give the rear edge of the opening a little bit of a slant rather than keep it circular and I believe most people wouldn't know if it was factory or not. Welded in. This gave me fits after I had it perfectly aligned and tacked. I started welding on two sides only and didn't noticed it had pulled away from the tacks on the third side. He fender shape is quite different when unbolted from the body and would have made it difficult to align the panel on the workbench. I tacked the panel with the fender bolted on. There is still a 1/4" overlap of the panels at this time, then take it off the car and start cutting along the edge up to the next tack, then aligning the cut portion and replace it with a permanent tack. The lower half has been cut and permanent tacks placed. The tacks have to be spaced far enough to allow the panels to be aligned where the permanent tacks are placed. A little crowded in the shop. I had an issue with the mechanical tach making a ruckus in the roadster lately and decided to pull it for a servicing. Of course we had the first rain day in I don't know how long. Anyway the guy who "rebuilt" the tach only did a cosmetic restoration and never bothered to even clean the lube passage and fill it with new grease. Anyway, it's lubed, cleaned and back in the car.
