Getting started on the old 39 Plymouth and need advice on the windshield. I made all the glass patterns and because the top is chopped there is differences from one side to the other. The windshield would mount from the inside using the original type weatherstripping and the center rubber. I am skeptical that I can make that work as it is pretty tight on the inside. Any ideas on gluing in from the inside and caulki ng the center ?
Unless the actual windshield pinch welded leg has been modified, the stock gasket should work. Just cut it to fit and glue back with superglue. Cut real square and you will barely be able to see the joint. If the glass pattern is not the right size, that is your problem. Work on making that the correct fit and it should all go together without problems. By caulking the center, do you mean V-butting the center? You need to get your patterns real close so that center fit is very close.
I was toying with the idea of bending a piece of lexan and gluing it in. I took a test run on a scrap piece of lexan and it will take a lot more patience with the heat gun.
I would just go for a bonded in windshield. You would probably want to add a metal strip along the pinch weld so there is more glass to metal bond (but maybe not), and then make a center support. This bonded windshield on a 48 Plymouth coupe was pretty much just thrown in, a bit more work for a smooth transition between the glass and the metal would look a lot better. This one has been leak free since 2010. I've also done a bonded windshield on a 39 Dodge pickup, and it was a much better transition, but I no longer have pictures of it.
