The straight 8 in my 39 Pontiac is not getting spark across the points. It has 6 volts from the coil terminal down to the distributor terminal but I don't get anything across the points, thus no spark. What do I need to check?
Can you watch and see if it’s throwing a blue spark? Under the cap, could be a capacitor but seems more likely just dirty points?
Do you have 6 volts at the connector on the points? Does the distributor have a good ground? If you close the points, does the voltage go to zero? If it doesn't and you have 6 volts at the point connector, it points to a bad ground.
I will check that out tomorrow after I get home from my orthopedic Doctor's appointment. I tried to move a boat trailer, on jack stands, sideways with just the sudden hard impact of the top of my head.It kinda squished a coupe vertebrae in my neck.
Is the trailer ok...??? Hope you haven't done any serious damage....... and hope your neck is ok too.
Trailer is fine. My neck, not so much. Basically down to bone on bone in C-2, 3 and 4. Getting old ain't for sissies! I got side tracked and haven't had a chance to check the car yet. I don't need to really worry about it because it will be the new owners problem in about a week!
The car is the new owners problem now. He was excited that the motor turned over on battery power. I showed him a short video of me driving it around the yard. I thought I had a parking brake to slow it down. I was only going about 10mph but the emergency brake failed and I used the radiator and cedar tree stump to stop the car. I did kill the ignition but that didn't slow the beast down. Luckily, I had pulled the original radiator and put in an odd ball that held water. The car smoked, but that was because I had soaked the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil for a week or so prior to starting it. https://youtu.be/WfO_PYNsPI0
