I just don't know why transport guys deliver at 3am!

As soon as she got home I ran out and bought her some new/used shoes and a new/rebuild 6volt battery.

I didn't realize that 39's had hydraulic brakes either. Now I just have to get used to right hand drive.

    Hell yeah, I'd drive that!

It might want to drift a little to the left all by itself, though....

  4. Very cool! I used to own a '39 Willys sedan. So what is the plan for your Ute? Stock, Mild or Wild??

Stock for now and then I'm not sure. I would really like to learn the stock drive train, brakes, electrical and drive it a bit.

How the hell do you change the headlight bulb?

Actually it's not too bad...one bolt/screw that holds the strap and bucket in place(that is also part of the head light adjustment process too). With the bolt out, the strap comes off, and the bucket will come out, exposing the reflector, and bulb. Really helps if you remove the front tire to get more access space. Things get a bit crusty under there, so sometimes the bucket may need a little gentle persuasion to free it from the pot metal piece that holds the headlight gl*** bolted to the fender. Taking out the gl*** lense is a bit more complicated, as it involves removing the pot metal piece from the fender, and then carefully removing the stainless trim piece that hold the lense in. If your are staying with the six volt system, that is all the info you need...if you convert to 12 volt, that is a whole different animal, that took me a while to sort out for decent lights.

I've never seen a 39 Ute before. I did a google image search yesterday looking for a goo picture of their headlights and only found 1 good picture of the 39 lights. that is cool.

Looks like an Ozzie car with that filler panel between hood and door?

3a.m. Delivery is rough but where in hell did you find brake shoes and a battery for a Willys at that time of night:D. Congratulations on a great purchase. I love the body style.

  16. Well I suppose you guys have to get back at us Aussies buying the occasional US car over the past few yrs.....lol......that's definitely an Oz Ute, as far as I know they were only made by Holden for Willys, the Norm Darwin History of Holden book states that 620 were made by Holden from 1938 thru to 1941.........nice car.....andyd

Yeah! I'm getting ya back!! LOL

It has a Holden name plate on it. It's interesting though, the window and door cranks are not american Willys, I'm guessing Holden made them.

1938-39 Willys utes - Holden bodied - had a parallel split rear window. This changed to a more drooping split rear window for the 1940/41 Holden bodied utes. Utes were also made in 1937-38 by Hope Body Builders (roadster ute), Mitchell (Closed cab 3 window) and TJ Richards (closed cab 5 window). They looked very different from the Holden bodies....

I installed a new fuel pump, points and condenser and she lit right up!!

I still want to take a look at the brakes and clean out the fuel tank before I take it for a spin.

What an outstanding score! You won't see many of those wherever you may go with it.

  22. Mention of the T J Richards Utes made me find the pic I have of the 1939 Plymouth Roadster "Ute" I had the remains of 30 yrs ago.....the front end pic shows the car as it was found by a mate, he didn't want the body shell and I got that, it was more a roadster "pickup" with a stepside style table top back and used cast roadster style windscreen posts like that used up to 1936/37. TJ Richards also made 3 window Coupe style Utes with the normal one piece ute body which were much more common......this roadster Ute is the only 1939 Mopar roadster Ute I have seen or heard of in 45 yrs playing with mopars........that coupe is the 1940 Oz Dodge Coupe I had, they were made from 4dr sedans by TJR and used sedan front doors and centre door pillar..........andyd

I like the roadsters! Did you keep it?

  24. Nope, ended up selling it when we moved up the coast to Grafton, dunno whatever happened to it........but I wouldn't be surprised if there were other Roadster Utes around like it.......I saw a 1941 Ford Roadster Pickup about 30yrs ago now still being used as a plumbers truck, complete with pipe racks and pipes in a suburban area of Sydney........, not restored but nice original condition.......no camera tho'..........andyd

    A very rusty truck.

I was going to shove it in the corner but it's a bit rough even for me so I'll p*** it to a friend.

Took the gas tank in today for a cleaning, it weighed a lot when I dropped it off and light as a feather when I got it back and WOW did the old gas stink. I don't think this truck has been driven in a very long time.

Started replacing brake parts today so it should be hitting the road soon, the engine sounds strong and no smoke.

A few months back I was dropping off my olds rear to get cleaned and as I was leaving someone stole an antique british gas tank from the chemical strippers front area where they leave them to dry in the sun.

We canvased the neighborhood but didn't find the crook, the owner of the stripping company was bummed so I told him I would find him a replacement. He was stoked that I found one so he didn't charge me the stripping costs for my parts. I'll always be loyal to them, It never hurts to do good in life.
