Need a second opinion- trying to verify if previous owner installed clutch facing the wrong way or its correct for the straight six. I've done numerous clutch jobs raised hub always facing transmission side and flatside toward flywheel- SBC BBC Ford etc etc. I pull trans on this car and raised hub is facing flywheel side which you would think clutch was installed backwards. I've seen the Old NOVA shop manuals the 194' and the 153' faces the opposite direction than your typical SBC... is this correct or a misprint or the disc should face like your typical SBC? car working on is a 62 Nova with a 3 speed Saginaw.
Chevrolet did that backwards disc thing to us for a while in the mid - late '60s ...not on the full size cars or trucks, but on Chevy II & Camaro, maybe Chevelle. We fixed a lot of gas station mechanic clutch jobs after they did it twice & still wouldn't work ....
I remember being told about the backward Nova clutch disc. I think I may have installed a clutch disc backwards on my old Plymouth flathead 6 too. I had to flip some linkage over and shorten a link in order to get enough throw to engage the clutch but it did work.
A disk installed backwards won't have any effect on clutch pedal travel. If the flywheel isn't thick enough the springs in the disk will hit the flywheel bolt heads. Usually you catch it when you stick the disk on the pilot shaft and slide it up to the flywheel and turn it by hand and feel the springs drag on the bolt heads.
Ok, never knew the backwards clutch was a thing for GM. well just want to clarify if it was indeed correct.
