"194 Tempest Drivetrain in a Model T questions" ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ConceptVehicleDesign, Jun 5, 2008.

  1. I can't believe I missed this one. Cool project! How's progress?

  2. Sorry, I haven't updated in a bit.

We just got kind of settled into our new place and I finally have power at the new shop.

I will post some pics soon, that will be taken with an actual camera!

  4. Well, it has been a long time coming, but we finally had the time to do some more work on the T.

    It certainly goes like stink!

And no tall tales about the way this motor bucks!!!

Thanks for all the tips and tricks so far!

So, is the 2 speed auto good enough? I've had plenty of 'glides, and if the power to weight ratio is high enough haven't even missed the lower gear.

Anyway, I really like that setup.

They do make for a conversation. Last friday @ Bob's in Taluca Lake/Burbank Ca.there was a roadster with a blown Tempest engine in it. It had the trans behind the engine. Wicked sounding and smelled good on race fuel.

  7. I don't know that I will ever have occasion to take on the interstate, but on the trial run today it seemed to have enough speed for me. The power to weight ratio seems great. It really gets up and goes!

  8. They are quite the odd duck!

I really dig the rear trans, the torque converter is just hanging out in the breeze spinning it's little heart out! Wacky!!!

My brother ran a 194 Pontiac in an X/F dragster in the early 60's they are 1/2 of a 389, why not run a regular trans and rear end. We also had a 63 Tempest with a 194 and the transaxle is the weak link. I like the idea those little engines ran good and made enough power for a light car.

You gotta promise me to paint a pattern on the torque converter. When you speed up and slow down the different concentric rings will stop, go CW, CCW, etc.....:D

I had a 194 in a 46 flat fender jeep, yours is the first one I've seen since that one went away. In your picture I couldn't see if yours had the four barrell on it or not. The one I had was a screamer.

    LOL, LOVE that idea!

  14. I'm working on it. My buddy should be out next week. My son thinks it sounds pretty tough. I just ran a straight pipe all the way back from the manifold. It certainly makes some ruckus!!! Not obnoxiously loud, but no hiding when I've got my foot in it!

  15. No four barrel, just a monojet. I don't mind though.

  16. Great minds think alike!!!

That pattern is way more intricate than the one I had planned, way cool though.

Hey Guy!!! How's that rear axle working out for ya???

  18. Hey, Keith!!!

The axle seems to be working just fine! I only wish that the weather would cooperate so my son and I can go for a drive!!!

Hopefully I can get a video up soon of it running, it sure is fun!

As you can see by the pictures, I couldn't get a generator to fit the motor, so I fabbed up some brackets to run a GM 10si alternator.

Next on the list is to re-do the oil filter relocator so it stops leaking, otherwise it seems to be holding fluids well!:D

  19. Well, it's been a while since I've updated, but I got the frame all boxed in and finished up the brake and steering mounts. Spent the dry parts of summer driving it and working the bugs out! :D

I took the frame out to M&M finishing in Vancouver to get blasted and powdercoated. They did a great job at a great price! Sandblasted and coated in matte black with the VIN taped off, and then a high-gloss coat of clear powder, and it looks a million times better than I expected!!! All that and you can still see the frame number! Take that Washington DOL!!! :p

Here are a couple of pics, since I know that's what everyone wants anyway!

Funny stuff. As they said, you just HAVE to do something on that converter! Try stuff! Here are some interesting propeller photos. The hard part, is that they look one way sitting still, and so much different spinning. Gary

  21. I just wrapped up building a lake header for it today. I had picked up an old trailer for the 1936 pick up bed on it. When I got there the trailer was actually the back half of a 1936 pickup! It was pretty much there, banjo, bones, frame and the driveshaft was modified to put the receiver in. I cut that bit out and figured what the hell, I'll try a lake header.

If I ever need another one, I will order it from gear drive! What a pain in the ***! ImageUploadedByTJJ1354505569.159605.jpg
