I need your expertise...... I bought a 1940 Dodge 4d Sedan, nice shape, original, but missing the engine. Wondering what they came with stock, or what can be put in as an alternative that would bolt to the existing original transmission & rear? Believe the transmission is column shift (3 speed)? Just got it yesterday, will be getting into it soon for the #'s etc. Thanks for any help and direction. Brad
I believe they had a 200 ci flathead six. Not sure anything else will fit that bellhousing, but you might get a later engine and bellhousing to fit the ******. I'm not a Mopar guy, so not real up on them.
my buddy just bout a 40 dodge coupe w/ a running flat six in it...I know he has plans to install a V8..not sure how soon..I'll drop him a line if your interested in buying the motor
It would have been a flat 6 with a 3 on the tree. Those motors were essentially unchanged from the late 30's well into the 50's. You should be able to find a good runner without a lot of trouble. Lots of good info at www.p15-d24.com
You can use any pre '59 Chrysler product 6 - the '51 up DeSotos (251") & '52 up Chryslers (265") are a bit longer, but are easy to install by drilling a few holes. If you're lucky, you might find a donor car with an overdrive.
