1940 Ford Sedan Delivery Project

WOW! Beautiful truck, beautiful work.

 

I WAS going to use the ashtray vents that Oldair sells but they were UGLY. After researching, I found some Bob Drake vents that look much better, so I formed some patch panels to go into the square holes I had shaped for the Oldair vents and welded them in. A little hammer and dolly work later, I finally have the dash acceptable. This is a much better look.

 

We have power door locks, power windows, no vent window and bear jaw latches. A lot of work in these two doors. This is my first time using SPW power window kit and I like it. It would have been better to do it before painting but I managed to get it done without harming anything. I will paint the bare metal when I get back from Triple Crown.

This little 400 HP 350 small block Chevy should motivate the Sedan Delivery pretty well. Installed the Vintageair Front Runner system yesterday. I like the compactness and the clean design. Not gaudy like some that are on the market. It will be connected to a T5 5speed transmission with overdrive.

 

Wow. I never dreamed installing the engine would be this hard. After taking 3 attempts today, my friend Richard and I decided on this approach for tomorrow.

First, we will remove the radiator (which includes the Cooling Components fan and the Vintageair condenser) and then remove the front grill assembly. Then, we will install the engine/transmission assembly. After that, we will install the radiator assembly and then the grill assembly. Hopefully, there is room for all that. Wish me luck! Since I didn't mock up this car, I have no idea how all this stuff is going to fit but I know it's going to be tight.

 

Well, we got the SBC and T5 nestled into place today. It is the tightest fit I have ever dealt with but removing the front grill was the hot lick. Despite that, it was still TIGHT. There is a lot of work yet to be done but this was the big hurdle I was dreading. I now know that my nice copper/brass radiator and fan will clear my front runner system. There is 1/4" clearance between the firewall and the distributor. So, I will sleep easier tonight.

 

I just love dressing engines. Polished the intake up a little and reinstalled it and the carb. Then, I stabbed the distributor in and decided to finish my spark plug wires. I saw the recent thread on spark plug wire routing for SBC's and decided to take a different tack this time. I routed the wires underneath and back to the distributor and I think it gives a really clean look. At some point, I need to repolish the valve covers but that can wait. The intake was a lot easier to do with it out of the car. Next step is routing all the battery cabling.
