Bought 1940 Ford where someone has removed the column shift linkage and side shift transmission and replaced it with a closed driveline 3 speed floor shift transmission. I'm guessing a 1935-36 tranny.
I've located a 1946 side shift transmission and the gentleman says he has 3-4 1946-48 complete columns, with linkage, he thinks are the same as 1940.
He lives 225 miles away and it's a long drive to look if they're not the same. Tranny should be the same.

Be aware the 46 trans mount on the trans is different from the 40 trans mount. I think the linkage is the same but I'll let someone else verify.

yup, I looked the trans up in my Hollander interchange manual and it lists 1940 as being all by itself and 41-48 being different but it does not say why. It would seem to me that you should be able to remove the mount/torque tube adapter from the trans that is in it now and use that on a later trans. I do not know that for certain. I have the shift column and lever here from a 46, I will dig it out and compare it to what is on my 40

This is what I have. I took it out of a 46 ford, the levers look exactly the same as the ones on my 40. I don’t have a good way of measuring the length of the one in my car though

  6. I believe they are the same, although on the 41-48 columns, the column drop is a couple inches further down the column tube as is the lock collar for the column lock.

What leads me to believe this is that I used a '46 steering box in my '40 panel truck as a direct replacement. We also used a '41 passenger column in my brother-in-law's '40 pickup because a '40 passenger column's drop placed the steering wheel too close to the dash. The result with his truck is that it nearly matched the placement of the steering wheel of my '40 stake truck with a stock column.

    Hope that helps.

This is what I found on the column drop.
I talked to the guy that cut the column in half because he is using the top and he said he still had the shift linkage and to come over and see what's available. he's got a box full of parts he's not using. Luckily it's a 40 coupe.
