Flathead powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery Hello, Since I had no money, the lever shocks in the flathead powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery were fine for our needs on long road trips on flat highways. The problem was not suspension problems, but lack of power trying to climb steep hills in San Diego, in the Santa Barbara area, and close to home, Laguna Beach. Despite going as fast as we could approaching said steep hills along the coast, 3rd gear just did not get it and 2nd was always necessary. On some traffic situations, first gear was needed to keep up with traffic. Yikes! But, the flathead gave me plenty of mile of trouble free start up and go anywhere without any repairs. Jump up 6 years after high school graduation and a new problem arose when my wife and I were ready for a hot rod project. We bought a 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery and thought it was finished to a point that we could do our thing with the styling and repairs necessary. We were in for a shock, pun intended. The ride was awful and the handling at speed on the freeways and straight aways along the coast were wobbly, drifted and was in need of repair. So, the process started with the front end repair/replacement. We did as much as we could and then had to take the 327 sedan delivery to a friend’s repair shop who also did tires, suspension, and alignment. He had the car for a week doing his repair and replacement of almost every part of the front end. The first to go were the stock lever shocks. He said that it was a major part of the problem and installed tube shocks. But, that made the first ride around the block noticeable as a good drive. But, it still drifted and wobbled. So, he kept it another week to do further repairs and this time, almost replaced most of the front suspension. It was slightly lowered, too. Jnaki After he kept the 327 powered sedan delivery for that whole time, as I drove the fixed problems and surprised at how much it was better in overall handling, braking and going over normal street bumps and intersections. The higher speed freeway and long flat streets were simple wonderful. No drifting, no bumps and steered straight with a hands off testing. It was now a great handling hot rod. No more lever shocks and with the new replacement parts, was such an improvement that it was hard to grab the keys first on a daily basis. My wife like the sedan delivery. She drove it more than her corvair or the El Camino. It sure seemed like she was out of the door first with the keys and I did not get much of a chance to drive the “newly repaired” 327 powered sedan delivery. YRMV1
