1940 Mercury Freshly Chopped

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by **DONOTDELETE**, Sep 16, 2004.

  1. I am good at math. I like chopping cars. I know my limits though and I know the mother of all customs is over my head. I found this car a while back and turned it on to Rudy because I have way too much going on and would only mess it up anyway.

1940 Merc chops go wrong in the back. The stock "dome" in the front is beautiful but is way too bulbus in the back. I have always felt that when the "dome" in the front slowly blends into a pancaked, flattened, flowing rear section, the chop looks best. It's a tremendous amount of work because the rear half of the car needs to be totally hand made. Most guys skip this because it's both hard and time consuming. A few weeks ago I requested shots of "stardust" because it comes close to what I consider the perfect chop although I dont like the 47 back window.

Rudy did this in two days. It will be welded up and seamless tomorrow. The front window will go up an inch or so. This will be a special car.

  8. this is before he finishes it. According to Rudy, the entire back half of the roof needs to be thrown away and remade to look right. that's why I didnt do it. I hope the shots look ok, the metal work is as smooth as a baby's *** and wont need filler.

after looking at these pictures I noticed the car looks like it has rust but it really is a nice dry solid car.

That's a really fine piece of work, and your description of what is needed to accomplish it is most interesting.

Glad to hear the windshield will be raised; when they're chopped as much as the side windows they look dumb.

Dam, I wish I had time to stop over to make the drop, I would like to see your stuff, but I would never get out of there in time to stay on schedule. Maybe next trip.
I could just move to Cali. if you didn't have so many rules.
