I have a 1940 V8 60 motor and transmission but the block is bad and I just bought a good 1938 motor .I just read that the 1940 trans is unique to that year only.Does anybody know if I can use the 1940 trans and 1938 motor and if any modifications are needed?Thank You

I don't believe a '40 V8-60 trans will bolt up to a '37-39 V8-60 block. For some reason, I remember something about the crank shaft lengths being different, which are accounted for in the length of the bellhousing cast on the back of the block.

I just opened up my Green Bible, and confirmed that there is one replacement block listed for '37-39 V8-60s, and only one replacement block listed for '40 V8-60s. It also lists that the crankshaft is unique for '40 V8-60s only.

I converted a '40 V8-60 sedan over to a 85hp last winter. Unlike the '37-39 V8-60 trans, the '40 V8-60 trans uses the same gear set as the 85hp trans. Also, a '40 V8-60 trans will bolt up to a 85hp block - I don't know if the '37-39 V8-60 trans will though.

    It'll fit (assuming it's 60)
The crank difference was up front...1940 crank was extended to allow use of the low fan in the 1940 cars. This was not necessary in '39 because the crank fan was only on deluxe cars, which could not be ordered as 60's
The '40 60 trans uses the 85 HP gears, and is basically an 85 trans with the minor mods to clear 60 starter.
In '37-9 most 60's got their own trans, with much smaller gears than 85. Commercial and Taxi 60's got the big gears, again with minor mods to clear the starter.
