Wow! That looks awesome. That Custom '41 Chevrolet has always made me think of the idea of getting one and having a chop just like it. The only thing is the abrupt end of the rear belt line trim, maybe have it flow better like the Ford's and Mercury's? Would love to see more Buick and Chevrolet Customs too. Ken
That is it Rik,if it were mine I would go for that on the fadeaway exactly. To me that has class and flows with elegance.
Well, you had some great roots Phil. You got to visit some of the best to ever do it in my opinion. Those are great memories, like I said .....all I can do is go down to the king taco down the street from where the shop was and grab a burrito then drive back to the location and eat my food and daydream of what used to drive up into that spot where the shop was.
The rake that is being talked about on this thread is ass end lower then the front end,it is a late 40's early 50's trend not a late 50's like you said. The rake you are talkin about (im pretty sure) is front end lower then the rear ??? and yes that is a late 50's 60s trend Maybe I can shed a little lite on the forward rake....In around about 1957 a few mild customs appeared in Rod & Custom with the nose down lower than the front...mostly exclusively from California..hence the name "California Rake"...It took the east coast a few years to catch up (see the East vs West articles) now we're not talking hot rods here...I was driving my 53 Merc that was lowered all around with skirts...when I saw those pictures of what was happening in California, I removed my fender skirts and rear lowering blocks....my buddies thought I was crazy, but after a few weeks they followed thru on their cars...all this happening in North Dakota.
Axel and Tony...guess I should have continued reading this thread before I jumped in..looks like you've both covered the "California Rake"
Rikster would know, couple years ago a medium blue 47-48 Chevy ragtop with fade aways, ran Sombreros and had a white top. I can understand the work involved in doing fade aways but damn if the results aren't worth it.
The FadeAways give the car a whole other look. It sure does make the car look so much longer. I can't start working on my 41 till my 51 chevy is done. I tod the wife i would and dont want 2 projects going on at the same time. If i did that non of them would ever get finished. Hopefully that will be in February
Another great thing about the 41 chevy's is how from the factory it already had a couple of custom treatments. Its rockers were rolled and the b-pillar was curved.
thought I'd throw mine in.... 1946 Pontiac Streamliner. Pretty much the stock look except for the lower.
See man,I wouldnt steer you wrong.I think fadeaways belong on those cars but people just arent used to seeing them.
I your right on that people just arent use to seeing them. Also i think that people think its a big pain in the butt to make them or a crap load of money to have them made.
Thanks Jeff!! Now im i just order a 42 Buick grill. Now im thinking when its time to start my 41 chevy, that i might turn it into a Carson top. I have always loved Carson topped 40s customs. Could never afford a convertible. My wife bought me my 41 chevy. she did it cause i kept saying i wanted a 40's car. She is awesome! I really love this mercury!! Its what made me look for a 42 Buick grill.
To me. This is just pure sex!!! The lines are beautiful and graceful. This will be my goal for my 41 Chevy.
It is a very nice Custom... but don't pattern the Padded top after this one. The shape of it is not really so good. Especially over the windshield frame it is to upright and does not flow with the windshield like the original Carson, Gaylord and Hall tops did.
I just reread this whole thread and have 2 questions : Why did guys have such cool names back then like Link Paola and O.K. Hooker ? Why were the cars SO BADASS ? Man was this the best era for cars !!!
The stuff 40s custom dreams are made of.I love this car right here from the fadeaways to the True... Chris-Craft(speedboat) stance. This car looks like it should have a wake behind it as if it was hauling ass across Lake Arrowhead. Photo from Rikster.
That is a great stance Jeff. I wonder if the body work is a rough as it appears to be in that picture or if it is just weird reflections.
