Technical 1941 Ford-Mercury Custom Ideas

  1. IMHO you've made a giant leap forward by painting the side grilles body color. They always looked kind of "Bucky Beaver-ish" to me with the (forerunner to the Edsel) stock front end.

    Some really cool looking cars with great work. Whatever you do, after putting a lot of effort into making a cool unique custom, don't drop the ball when it comes to drive train. So many just go for the cheapest easiest most generic option and fit a regular sbc. Just like everything else. There are so many other options that better add to the old school cool than a common sbc.

    Hopefully you can tell from my username that I completely agree with you. Mine has an 8BA flathead with some old school goodie’s in it now but I’m thinking about swapping in a Y block in the future.

    That would be super cool. The y-block is arguably the best small cube v8 Ford made.

    This is a Ford Special (strippo) stock. I bought it a year ago. It has the blackout side grills stock. Leftover '40 bumpers stock. One windshild wiper, one tail light, stock. Painted black plastic side trim rather than stainless, stock. Going for very traditional custom/hotrod but having trouble figuring out what to do. Traditional 40's hotrods were almost all 30's roadsters. Hardly any '40's hot rodder would start with a business coupe. Very little to work with.

    There are moonshiners of course. That blackout look goes well with both the original Special and moonshiners.

    I'm doing period correct. It's 6v. Found an original Eddie Meyer intake.

    Have a set of Eddie Meyer aluminum heads but haven't gotten them installed yet.

    Not going to do any sheet metal work. Personal preference is to make it easily restore-able to stock.

    Interior is another story. The current interior is already non-original. The original material for a Ford special is simply unavailable; it would have to be custom woven. Could go with naugahyde tuck an roll, very late 40's, early '50s but a moonshiner wouldn't spend money on that.

    Removing the front bumper and adding nerf bars might be a good look but I don't think a moonshiner would spend money on that either.

  8. A moonshiner might dump the front bumper for nerf bars to save some weight.....
    Work on the stance (just a touch nose-down)
    Keep it dark and sinister (wheels and tires, too)
    Try SMS (upholstery supplies) for the interior material (a moonshiner would have had a stock interior)
    A moonshiner would have kept the one taillight, but I think I'd add one to the p***enger side for safety.

  9. Thanks for the reply! Great ideas. The more I think about it, my post is on the wrong forum. A moonshiner would have a Ford Special, but it wouldn't be a custom, it would be a sleeper that looked like just another car so as not to draw attention.

  16. Oaki Pete, looks like that started life as a long door coupe. The chop converts grandma's car to an awesome cruiser. So glad it has the stock 1941 grill, personally, I love it, unique all on it's own without customizing (my own car is a '41.) Brad
