I went to a local car show a couple weeks ago and there was a car there for sale that belonged to a neighbor whos husband had passed away 3 years ago. He was a family freind, car collector and a fellow Veteran. I called his wife and asked if she didn't recieve any offers, and that she let me take it home and see if my wife, who is disabled, 30 years MS, could get in the passenger seat, I would buy it for what she was asking. She said yes, and now its ours. It's a cool old car and runs like a top. I had to replace the battery and the next thing is the tires. They look great from afar, but are old and have lots of cracks in them. I would like to buy new rims and tires and keep the old set together in the shop for yard art, etc. The size is stock at 600-16. If I went to a 15 inch rim, I think I would have more options, etc. What would be an equivalant to a 600-16 in a 15? I plan on keeping it as is with some touch up and stay up on the maintenance. In fact, I took it to a show today and had a ball. Didn't take any hardware home, but saw a bunch of people I haven't seen in a while. Thanks, Carl I forgot to add that the 7 year old grandson gave the car a 9 out of 10. Pretty sure I got dinged for no seat belts. He was concerned about that, LOL.
Yes, the look is great. The current wide whites have 4 inch white sides. The 4 inch seem harder to find then the 3 inch. Thanks.
https://kelseytire.com/product/goodyear-710-15-super-cushion/ These are pretty close and have a big whitewall at 4-1/4 inch. And though they are 15 inch the tire height and tread wide are the same. Just a bit fatter in the middle. So, it should steer the same. Now I will need to find a 15 inch rim with the correct bolt pattern and width... Just an idea for now, but need to do something soon or no long rides etc....
The 670-15 and the 710-15 are almost identical, but the 710 is closer in height to the original 600-16. But the 670 is a bit slimmer in the middle. Everything else is the same. 10 bucks cheaper, each. There is that.. LOL. Thanks for the reply, Carl
6.70 - 15 B.F. Goodrich 3'' whitewall would look perfect on the car. Those huge whitewalls make a car look cartoonish IMHO ... Look for Chev pickup wheels that were available from late '40s until the early '60s - they have the clips your caps fit.
lol always easy to tell who’s a kustom guy and who isn’t when it comes to tires and ride height. I have 700/16’s with 4” whitewalls on my 47 and for a kustom I think they look great. To my eye anything larger belongs on a bigger car such as a Cadillac. Unless wanting different hubcap options I see no need for changing to 15” rims. But the Goodyear supercushions your looking at are great looking tires.
Those are 6 hole wheels and the Master Deluxe came with 4.11 rear end ratio. You might be challenged to find 15" wheels with 6 hole pattern and then there is the hubcap challenge I have 6.50 -16 Firestones on my '39 and that dropped the engine RPM for the road speed some and I wonder if I should have gone with 7.00-16.... Coker has a FREESHIP sale going on until the 3rd of September and if you get a HAMB Alliance membership there is an additional discount on top of that and it pays for the membership and more.... That's my $.02
Hello, One day I was out and about running some errands. Across the parking lot, I spotted an unusual color, a flashback from those teenage years. It was a cross between Bronze and Fawn Biege, a couple of favorite colors at the time. Upon closer inspection, the 41 Chevy sedan had some custom touches that no other car had that was on the road. Hood louvers, louvers on the rear fender, cool “ghost flames.” But, the most unusual custom touch was the addition of an electric antenna built into the top of the rear fender. Also, highlighted with “ghost flames,” but, this time the flame outline was a raised shape, encircling the antenna hole. It was something we had not seen since those early car shows from the way back time machine days… nice… Jnaki There was no speculation, wild guesses or perhaps this size would look the best... the sight of the full size tires that fit perfectly answered the ever asked question. What size tires can be mounted and driven. Here is a daily driver and the appearance was perfect. To answer your posted question, the tires were 215-70 / R 15. They filled up the wheel opening quite well. YRMV
I found 4 15" six hole wheels with tires that the seller said came off an old Chevy truck. I had the '41 in the shop replacing a bent front bumper brace, so while is was rotating the tires, I tried one of the one I bought for fitment. It has a 670-15 tire on it that was well used and barely held air. Every looked great with plenty of clearence. When I get the tire off, I will measure the width of the rim. I think it looks like 5 inches, we will see. And, I did try my car hubcaps and they fit too. Not positive what they came off of, but they will work. Now off to the powder-coater for a coat of black. I will then have to save some coin and buy some new treads for next spring. I did remove all of the bumperettes front and back and "I" like the looks better. I think the only other thing I would add is a visor at this point. Enjoy.
The current equivalent to 670-15 is 195R85-15. Because of the low rear-end gears, you may want to go up a size or two to 205's or 215's, since you say you have plenty of clearance. Or, you could spend more for an inferior set of "classic car" tires; (white stripes are fine). I agree that your car looks great without the "bumperettes". When I was kid, they were among the first things we removed. I'm a little older now and generally leave them on a substanially stock appearing car. You may come to agree with me if you have to replace that beautiful grille or maybe the deck lid.
