It's time to work on my 42 Ford pickup. I drove it to high school in 68 or 69 and it's still at the farm. I was telling my son I'd like to go with no hood or fenders and about a 32 style grille and radiator with headlights like my bucket has. He thinks no. Anyone here have ideas for me?

I have a 46, which is the same truck.

I've seen them no hood and fenders with 30s grilles and I've seen them basically stock bodywise, and to tell you the truth, I like 'em both ways. You might check out carnut.com to find lots of pics. I think it's cool you have the truck you drove to high school back in the day.

Here is a picture of mine. I havent started on the hood yet. I think the grill bars are missing in the shot also.
The 42-47s are few and far between. I've seen fewer than a dozen on the road in a dozen years. 42's are very unusual. The figure for 1942 production is around 7,000, since Pearl Harbor stopped the model until 1945. FYI the 42-47s are a hot street rod item in Australia and NZ where their nickname is Jailbar.

Another shot of a Jailbar. This one is owned by a guy in my same town.

Your truck will look good either way. if you go fenderless i would be interested in the rear fenders.

I'd put a 40 front end on it

I think there is an unwritten law about running a car made after 39 or so fenderless ... just looks kinda funny. Those old Fords are so sexy in their bone-stock configuration, I 'd say keep those curves. Maybe run it hoodless, but fenderless? ... mmmm... no. My .02

Here's a '41, same cab, with open wheels. I tried it with no hood and a grille shell, but I liked it better with the '41 hood, big truck hood, not a pickup, but the same as a '42

The cabs are the same back to the 39 or 40 i believe... just the front ends changed in 42. Ive seen lots of those cabs fenderless and they look really good. I finally decided to do a full fendered truck but it wont be the jailbar front end.

I would suggest that you make the best of a very rare truck and run the hood , fenders, and grill, personalize the hell out of it but don't rat it up.

i have a 38, but i only have the front half of the sheet metal work and the front fenders are pretty well f'ed, now if i had an intact truck i more than likely would have slammed it, chopped it and ran fenders, but being where I am and the likelyhood to find the other parts Im going rudy style which was my intention in the first place, when searching for a project (i really only wanted to find a cab and possibly frame)

long story short if you've got'em use'em, if you dont, dont :p but chop it nice regardless :D

  15. I have seen that bodystyle of truck done both ways, I was even looking at a fenderless one to night and really lik'in it. I like them both ways.

Hey, the bottom line is it is your truck you should build what YOU want .

  16. This one's a Chevy, and one of the coolest fenderless trucks I've seen in a long time.

My 2 cents. If you just had a cab - OK run it fenderless cause it's easier. Since you have everything - run it - never been a big fan of going out of your way to make it ratty.

Thanks for the replys. I'm starting to think fenders would be okay. A freind has an extra 1940 hood and if I could find the rest of the forty frontend that will be my first choice.
