This 42 is a restoration that started in the late 80's and was never finished. I can't imagine getting this close and not getting it on the road but that is what happened. I picked this up and should have it purring like a kitten in a week or so. 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 12.jpg 16.jpg 17.jpg 18.jpg 19.jpg

Really nice ride. Great way to find them if you can. Sure like the dash and trim. Tempted to try the wood grain look on my Plymouth.

It's a typical case of 'high mileage burn out'. Old guys get that, so do young guys when projects hang around with insufficient funds to finish occur.
Nagging wives have the same effect, only they're harder to get rid of.
Fresh new projects renew interest in life, (also fresh young er, New wives!) Ask me how...
Here's a fresh new '42... (mine was a beautiful, fresh 22...) Same quotient of interest, our projects are many. One is a '47 sedan. LOVE these fat fendered Fords.

The guy I got it from was 90 years old. He said he didn't think he was going to get around to finishing it.

Wow, the majority of the hard work is done. Future plans with this gem? That is a rare car being 1942 due to WW2. There were only 5,936 Deluxe coupes, 5,411 Super Deluxe coupes and 1,606 Special coupes built from September 12, 1941 through to February 10, 1942 when production ceased.

Total Ford Production for 1942 was only 160,432
    Total production of:-
    Super Deluxe - 89,402
    Convertibles - 2,920
    Coupes - 5,411
    Coupe Sedans - 13,543
    Fordors - 24,846
    Station Wagons - 5,483
    Tudors - 37,199

My brother had a '42, same color but a tudor, it was the last car sold locally prior to
WW2 at Zentmeyer Ford in Oswego, Il. He had it in '57-'59.

  16. Wow, I remember on CL a couple years ago, a 42 coupe in similar shape, same color and everything, and same story on being nearly restored but never completed was for sale. It was 6-8,000.00 (cannot remember exactly). I figured that was it for sure when I opened this thread...until I saw the plate on the back!

    Great score

  17. Also, those tail lights do not have the ribbed trim on top, but looks like its all molded one piece being ribbed. I have never seen that...is that a 1942 feature?

  18. Very nice score. I feel real bad for the previous owner that ran out of time and energy.

Love the 42s. You need to give the old guy a ride as soon as you get it going.

  21. Yep, '42 is my favorite as well. Love the one-year only grille, really want one of these some day.

I so badly want a set of ford script bumpers for my 48. Great car. I'm doing a short door conversion on a sedan.

  24. One amazingly clean are rare car. A one in a million find for certain. I always liked the '42 over the '41.

On this, before I throw the battery in, how can I tell if this is a positive ground 6V system?

Nice car! I love the '42 grille as well, I found the center and stainless grilles, so built one for my 47 . Here's a crappy pic .[IMG]

If the car is stock, it should be 6V positive ground. Take a look at the wire connection on the coil-the positive connection should be traveling to the distributor. Great looking car and looking forward to reading more. Have fun! Steve

The coil was off. So on a positive ground ,the positive side of the coil goes to the points and the neg to the battery?
I will take a hard look at the schematic in the book before I hook it up. It does still have the really large battery cables.

The size of the battery post are different and the cables if original should show the difference of having been clamped to each size post.
