Projects 1942 Full-Race Merc Flathead - 284 Cubes of Awesome Music

Well - after two long years of work, a bunch of experimental parts and workmanship, today was the day to fire the engine for my 32 Cabriolet. I've detailed everything in my build thread (more than anybody can read in a lifetime), but wanted to post the video of what the engine sounds like. This is after about 10 minutes of break-in time . . . won't idle much below 1100 (due to the cam).

This was just done with my iPhone - the sound quality ****s . . . will update it with a better one tomorrow.

Engine Specs:
- 1942 Flathead Merc Block
- Heavily ported and relieved (intakes and exhaust ports)
- 4 1/8" stroke late Merc crank
- 21A full-floater rods
- Custom Ross pistons - 3 5/16 bore, metric TotalSeal rings.
- 1.72" intakes, 1.6" exhaust valves
- Custom roller cam - .420 lift, 320 degrees duration at .010, 280 degress at .050
- Vertex angle-drive magneto
- Eddie Meyer Intake - ported to the moon
- Navarro Heads (thanks Barney!)
- And a bunch of other goofy **** . . .

I recommend full-volume . . . as the sound isn't as it should be:

Wicked sounding little motor! It also sounded like it was idling well below 1100, it was just right.

 

Ain't nothing finer than a go Fast Flathead. Sweet Sound..

Hey Gang - glad you all liked it . . . is a nice sounding engine. This roller cam is really snotty and it really needs to warm up before it will "idle". Right now I have no thermostats in it - wanted to see that it cools without any restrictions, before I put them in. So far it runs about 160 - which makes me happy. I have work to do to hopefully get the racing clutch to disengage - we will see . . . always something!
