    Just curious what is different? Other than the obvious trim and grill...how about chassis or maybe hood length and possibly wheel base length? Any and or all the different features. Also vin location? Thanks fellers.:D

    I believe that the hood and front fenders are longer on the Mercury.
    When the Clarkaiser custom shop in Detroit built the Artic Sands custom they used the front clip from a Mercury. I beleive I read that it was 6" longer than the Ford.

    The bodies are the same. The extra wheelbase is in the nose thus longer hood/fenders up front.

  4. The whole front clip is very different. The Merc front end is a bit longer than the Ford. When I built the woodie front desk for my office, I started with a rusted out '47 Merc shell. The grille was toast, so I thought to myself, "Ford parts are available and everything looks kinda close-ish. I'll just put a Ford grille in it." When I got my mitts on a Ford grille, I discovered that the front of the Merc is much more "pointed" than the Ford and I had to pie cut the entire front of the clip to flatten it out to fit the Ford pieces.

    Frame: Same frame with front crossmember shoved forward...most frames have both sets of holes. Bracket added to move control ball forward at center. Legs added to front crossmember to move motor mounts back to where the motor actually is.

    Royalshifter, you planning another kustom?

  7. Merc=118" wheelbase
    Ford=114" wheelbase

    You can see the difference in the front fender behind the wheel opening-Merc is longer and meatier looking in this area.

    There were some 114" Mercs in Canada

  8. All I can add is the vin on the ford is on the drivers rail by the front crossmember.

    If you're going to build a custom you might want to look at the 41... I never noticed them until I bought a long door coupe... Kinda rare

  10. I have the spacer used to lengthen the wishbone to frame area from a Merc if anyone needs one...

  11. ...so, if I had a 46 Merc, can I remove the 4-door body from the frame and bolt on a 46-8 Ford coupe body?...will the Merc rear fenders fit a Ford coupe body/...or are they different?...will the 46 Merc front fit onto the Ford body?
    ...this is timely info, thanks

  16. Have you done a build thread for your merc like you did your 51?
