Technical 1947 Chevy Tranny adapter question ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Gasolinedeniz, Jan 6, 2023.

  1. Let me ask you a little question, I need an adapter so I can hook a 250 chevy motor to the original transmission on my 1947 Chevy three on the tree The 250 has the normal th350 bolt pattern but the 217 is different. I thought for sure there were adapter plates for small block conversions. That would be the same I think ?
So i would need a source for such a adapter .
Thanks in advance for your help

They were made years ago (in fact, I used to have one with HONEST CHARLEY cast on it), but to my knowledge, no one currently makes such an adapter. Today's adapters tend to do the opposite; bolt a modern transmission to a vintage engine.

  3. Looks like an old Offy #4013 is what you need (assuming it's a car).

Those 47-48 transmissions are really small and weak, I would try and use a little newer trans like out of a 50 up. The 47-48 are a weird shifting setup, unlike a normal two lever setup, the 47-48 has all four gears shifted with one lever and the other arm is to select either 1 and Reverse or 2nd and 3rd. It does not shift smooth especially without the vacuum assist. Just my experience with those original transmissions.

Wouldn't the V8 to '40-'54 trans adapter have the starter hole in the wrong place or is the 6 cyl starter clocked in the same position as the V8?

I think Bob is correct, up to a 54 adapter should work as all the transmissions up to then had the same pattern. The 250 starter bolts to the engine and a 250 flywheel will mate to it. Any diaphragm clutch should work as long as the spline is correct which is a 10. If the adapter has a pivot ball the fork will work. There are at least 5-6 throw out bearings of different lengths….. one should work. The trans will be the weak link but normal driving just fine. I believe their cluster road on bushings instead of later bearings.
I have no idea where you will an adapter. Wilcap doesn’t list one. I’d give “Chevrolets of the 40’s” a shot.

Is this for a car or a truck? A 48 to 54 truck trans will bolt to a manual trans bell housing for a 250. I'm not sure if the truck trans is the same length as a passenger car trans. Or go for open driveline while you're at it.

  8. Truck or car is a good question
My 49 truck has a full sync Saginaw bolted to the original bell
