  2. I have an ugly tilt column in my car, I think I'm going to remove it at some point it's very noticeable. But I'm liking the steering wheel idea, any pics?

Didnt you mention somewhere else this was an old custom from the 60s??
I love it anyway. If the tilte was 48-54 it would fit perfect imo, only problem is the year.
    No?

I posted my son's 54 because 52-54 Fords share the same body; & because the rear quarters are lenghtened 12" w/ 52-54 Lincoln quarters& lights, & the front is modified w/ a 52-53 Mercury front bumper/ grille.

  8. That is a beautiful custom and would love to have one like it. but...... unfortunately it doesn't fit here....
like my pisano bonez said it's hard to build a car 2 years before it was manufatured....

i dont know where your going with this thread?.... kinda pointless,, or so you can act like a know it all and nitpick every car that doesnt fit perfectly..(hello) any guy that cares that much to be perfectly styled in those 4 years WILL NOT HAVE A MODERN DRIVETRAIN....he will be perfect styled through and through... or please post the one youve built

  10. I see both sides, and I'd still like to converse with 20 folks in this thread not 6. :)

My 48 Ford Coupe recieved a little razzin on the other 48-52 thread because it has a tilt wheel ,late 50's Dodge Lancer Hubcaps and a few other updates ,it is an oldtime custom that has seen some changes as the years went by,Looks like it will fit better on this thread

  15. The first post explains the era of cars I was looking for. My truck how and why I built it and rebuilt it...and why I chose to give it the look of this era.
customs are not customs just because they are customized cars......or a mini truck with lambo doors would fit in here. I'm looking for customs built like Mel Falconer's '39 Ford built by Harry Westergard, Jack Calori's '36 Ford coupe built by Herb Reneau,i bet you heard of that one latly....or George Baarris' 41 Buick....Gil Ayala's '40 Merc dry lakes street racer?
The were built with upscale grills, Packard, LaSalle and Caddy. almost always caddy caps. wide whites, shaved filled and smoothed. fender skirts and spots.....
Any thing past '52 does not fall into this era.....but I don't know who decided that.....
......so I'm not knit picking but a '54 anything really doesn't fit here, right? '59 caddy tail lights....a little late. See where we're I'm going here.

A lot of beautiful cars showed up here that didn't fit.....but are still nice cars. They just need a thread where they fit. The car right above me DOES FIT...the "look" but with a modern drive train and suspension......if more cars like this....or anyone truly trying to make thir car this nice, we'll be back on track with where I started....

koolkemp summed it up a couple post back....."It's really amazing how many people in this hobby don't really know what a traditional styled "custom" is"

  16. Show me a "Custom" truck, from 1948-52.

  17. I don't think there is one. but maybe some one had a shop truck and a extra packard grill laying around.

This is Gil Alaya's pickup, as appeared in R&C in 1953.

It is still on the road today, having been outfitted with a Nova sub-frame and SBC. So I guess it fits this thread.

Here is a pic I took this year at TRJ Show.

BTW, this is the second time Bruce Geisler has owned this truck, having originally bought it from Alaya himself in the early '50's. It's been pink a longg time!

I really don't care for the driveline of a kustom if it looks good, but as long as we're talking about 1948 to 52 "style", 59 caddy tailites can't play !!!

  20. I'm glad there was a pick up in this style. but the flames....I don't know if it fits lol
The first time I've seen this truck was on the chunky flames thread.

  22. I understand being specific, but let's not be get too Nazi like about it. Can get pretty arbitrary.

So I have a fugly late model column and an even more horrible steering wheel. Any suggestions of steering wheels that will bolt to GM tilt column that looks trad that are not really pricey?

PSJ, almost any steering wheel can be made to fit if you are determined. I PM'd you a photo of a wheel I modified to fit on the GM tilt column in my dad's 51 Merc.

Can you post some pics here? I would love to see them!

If I could comment a little on this type of build, in regards to my own situation, the main reason I use more late model stuff on my cars is I will never have the money to start with a good enough car that I can use all the original chassis etc, especially around here, I have yet been able to drag something home where the frame wasnt already rotted in two...it has taken me almost 3 yrs to find a saveable 39 chassis for my someday 36 project, I could probably build something from scratch or use late stuff alot cheaper and faster, but I am gonna try to use as much "old" stuff as I can on it. But this era of customizing is my favorite and I can piece my contraptions together so they at least look old...ok enough babble from me lets see some more cool cars, in progress too , lets see what other projects along this vein are being worked on :)

I would be glad to but the steering wheel I adapted is a bit too new for this thread (1960) although the same method could be used on an earlier wheel. I can pm you some photos of how I did it if you want.

  26. post them....i still have a 70 trans am colum......and wheel....and a 64 t-bird seat....... with the doors and hood closed it don't really matter....if it helps John out than that's cool. It seems like there is only a couple of us in here to begin with.
I agree with koolkemp, the salted dowm junk we have in the north east to start with dose not lend to a traditional build.....and he's a whole lot norther than me...yes....norther is a word.

,,,,and projects, we like to see projects.

Interesting stuff. I have a mixed build style because I started my build before I really got into the traditional custom stuff. I have always loved customs but my introduction to them was through magazines like Custom Rodder. My early influence was following build threads from guys like Darryl Hollenbeck, John Aiello and Marco Garcia who were building cars for guys like D'Agostino, Zocchi and Dore. I was aware of the traditional builders like Barris, Ayala, etc but wasn't as heavily into them until I had been on here for a while and at that point I had too much time and money invested in a more modern chassis set up to go back. As I have been exposed to and have grown to appreciate the tradtional custom I have modified some aspects of my build to fit into that time period which has left me with a type of hybrid if you will.

Post them here ! My 47 has a 59 Chevy dash, that was gonna be the only "custom" work when it was a 4 door . I am tempted to put something older in it, but its a***** load of work to rework it all , I will just tell people it was updated in the early 60's
