1948 Chevy Dash removal, can it be done?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris Stapley, Apr 5, 2011.

  1. Hey guys, just a quick question, I have a neighbor who wants me to take on the job of refabricating heater ductwork in his 1948 Chevy sedan. I know its going to be really tight if I have to work within the cinfines. My question is does the dash unbolt and move out of the way or do I tell him that I don't need the headache right at this point? I have done a lot of fab work over the years and don't want ot be bothered if it is going to be a nasty job, sort of at a time in my life finally where I can pick and choose the jobs .
    Thansk for the input,

    Chris.

  2. Yeah, I'm sure it does...I removed the dash from my 48 Pontiac to re-wire it...very similar body.

yes you can get it out the screws are under the windshield garnish mouldings. You will need to disconnect the throttle & choke cables, speedocable and and wiring to the guages or radio(I take that out) The cowl vent handle disconnects also. Heater duct work???? Do you mean defroster ducts? I can reach my hand up to them I bought new hose and it went on tight to the vents (those screw in at the top under the garnish moulding)

  4. Thanks guys, Historynw, didn't want to say the A word here but I'm reworking some issues that a fellow made when installing a Vintage Air unit up under his dash, as the client tells me it is "jammed " under the dash with no room to work around it. I'd feel way better if I could remove the dash for this sort of repair, make a much nicer job of things.

I put a vintage air in mine we just have to hookup the control unit and the relays under the hood. It took a little finessing to get it exactly where it fit flush to the firewall. I ditched VA's defroster hose and found exact fit ones...I think I paid a dollar a piece for them. My interior guy is going to put different vents in for me that fit the dash better, I could try and grab a couple pictures.

  6. That would be great, seems as though my guy is having issues with improper flow out of the ducts and any help would be appreciated. This is what I love about our HAMB family, always someone here to guide you along. I have helped many a person out this way too.
    Cheers,
    Chris.

  7. Got out to see the Chevy in question seems that this fellow had the original radio converted to digital AM/FM and also removed the factory speaker. He proceeded to have the AC vented out through the speaker hole, sounded cool in theory but no so good otherwise. The AC fan overheats due to the fact that he cannot move enough volume out through the original speaker hole and the Vintage Air unit works so good that the speaker grill frosts up and drip condensation all down his nice clean dash. Even has frost growing on the glass through the defroster tubes. I am now looking for a nice way to vent the cold air out facing forward without using those cheesy plastic AC boxes that all of the vendors try to sell. Keep in mind that this car is a resto look and we're trying to acheive a look of originality, any suggestions of a period looking vent? I've done some pretty extensive searching and without touring the local boneyards haven't come up with anything too promising just yet.I sort of pride the thought that I can make my customer happy and I'm about stumped. Not afraid of off the wall thoughts either, anything can be fair game, heck I thought the idea of using his speaker grill was genius with the exception of the poor perfomance.
