Hot Rods 1948 desoto tranny

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1949daveplymouth, Dec 21, 2022.

  1. I have a 1948 desoto I want to rebuild the flat head and get a ****** kit to bolt and s10 5 speed to it. I found one kit for it but the guy told me that the bell housings are different from then3 speed and the fluid drive. Does anyone know what the difference would be. Has anyone used a bell housing kit to up grade transmissions.

Fluid drive bell housings are a l o t longer than 3spd versions. They have to contain the clutch and the fluid coupling.

  3. As far as how they bolt up to the motor it’s all the same.

  4. Is that all that is different. People saying they are different and one won’t work with the other made me wonder if the bold pattern was different between the fluid drive and standard transmission.

As stated above, the FD housing is way too deep/long for a t5. The t5 Input shaft(MDG) won’t even come close to the crank.
